Yeah, I know, I posted 2 things in one day, whatever...
To anyone that cares, My first post of the day was "The Ocen Sighs Regret" - http://www.ubersite.com/m/76921
Inspired by Fudgepacknuts' Top 15 - http://www.ubersite.com/m/76916
I found that post to really get me thinking. Stranded on a desert island, with only 15 albums? Hmmm... That made me look through I-Tunes and my CD collection. Now at 28, I find I listen to all types of music. Granted, I'm really not as diverse as the Fudgeman, but I'll listen to anything that's not country.
I started thinking about albums that changed my life, that represented major times in my life and things that just are plain goddamn good. Cutting out greatest hits albums, (Cause that's cheating) I managed to narrow it down to 15 albums that have really influenced who I am today.
Now, I know, most of you could care less, and the metal heads on Uber are going to flame me for some of my choices. Yeah, yeah, -2DIE. But if I can get even one person to discover one of these albums, and they like it as much as I have, then I feel this post was successful.

+2 for title that made me laugh. Logged on drinking my coffee, and your post got me thinking: Where else could you see such a title?
I'm a Cure freak from "Wild Mood Swings" days, "Mixed UP" my fave traveling comp., Paris Live good also. Have about 2/3rds of your picks. The Psychedelic Furs should get a mention for how much they (probably influenced) The Cure, so I'll say "Midnight To Midnight" was one of The Furs best.
NIN+++
Must wrestle my Emo inner child back into its cage. Someday.

Wow. There are a lot of damn fine albums on your list; albums that I would really expect to see on anybody's list.
You just climbed a couple of rungs on my 'cool meter.' You should throw a party to celebrate!

+2 for because PJ Harvy smacks it.
Not a huge fan of her music but she's a west country girl and occasionally rocks a decent one piece.
This post needs more Jungle.

You name a bunch of prog, but you forget KING FUCKING CRIMSON? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU. Jesssus this is bad.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh fuck that. Their "Magnum Opus", Lizard, gets shit all over by basically all of Yes' and Genesis' opuses. Anyone who doesn't think Close to the Edge isn't the best prog song ever should re-evaluate things. King Crimson WAS the first too pull off prog (The Moody Blues weren't quite there), but their material is limited to about 3-4 albums. Yes is by far the most succesful prog band ever (let's not even mention anything they did after 1977). Right behind Yes is Gentle Giant who were so brilliant for so long. Their skill and tastful arrangements put them way up there. Nobody did it like them. And Genesis wrote The Cinema Show, which contains 5 of the best minutes of music ever put to tape. KC were bigger pioneers, but they didn't quite follow through after Lake did the bounce.
And Opeth can eat my shit. They haven't released anything very good since Still Life. There's much better metal out there.

I like the slipping in of Sigur Ros. Very nice way to get all those loser post-rock kids on your side. Even the PJ Harvey was off...not that I like her stuff. Never was a Depech Mode fan. Fabian did loads of heroin. NIN sucks. Tool and U2 are my least favourite bands in the world. The, and Led Zepplin. The rest is so-so. I like the Peter Gabriel...like 30 years ago. Pick up some of his work with Genesis (Selling England by the Pound).
If you like the expansiveness of Sigur Ros and the "technical ability" Tool passes off as complex inteagues you, then you'd like some prog rock. And I don't mean crap like Pink Floyd. Bands like Yes, Genesis, ELP, Grobbschnitt, PFM and my big fave, Gentle Giant, take conventional rock and knock it on its ass.

Penguin Cafe Orchestra.

OH MY FUCKING GOD! I can't believe you mentioned Penguin Cafe Orchestra! My friend had a tape of them back in the day...like 8 years ago or something...it was entirely instrumental. All of the stuff sounded like little pieces of a movie score. It was good. Thanks for reminding me of that.

Also: check out Marsen Jules, since your favorite Sigur Ros album is ( ). His CD Herbstlaub is fantastic, and I know you can download all of Lazy Sunday Funerals from his website.
Also Penguin Cafe Orchestra.

Watching this argument is funny.
In my time so far on this planet I've managed to like a little bit of just about every style of music in existence. It wasn't always so. When I was first learning to play guitar, all I ever wanted to hear was stuff that sounded like it was the hardest shit to play. That pretty much meant either metal or classical. In a lot of ways I'm glad I did that because it made me improve on my instrument. Hearing Yngwie Malmsteen, Kirk Hammett, Paul Gilbert, Andres Segovia, and all the speed and progressive metal guitarists play made me strive to push as far as I could.
I've since learned that the most important aspect of any musical composition is its emotion. If there is no emotion, it cannot conjure up all the things that make good songs great songs.
Music lives inside us because at some point it defines who we are, becomes part of who we are. They are no longer just songs, but pieces of ourselves. The wider your spectrum of musical enjoyment, the more well-rounded of an individual you'll become.

for VAST. I still can't understand why hardly anyone has ever heard of this band. The new album Nude is probably one of my favorite pop/rock cd's in recent times. Not a bad line-up. More into the underground space rock/atmospheric post-metal movement myself.

My sister loves Ani. From what I've heard, she's pretty expressive in her songwriting. Very distinct and moody...almost like she's constantly on the edge of laughing hysterically and crying and pulling her hair out screaming. It's a very nervous and jolting concoction. Good guitar work from what I've heard.
I can't rag you for liking her...I like Jewel's early stuff.
