A soft melody echoed from a distant time, a distant place. I hummed softly to myself as I walked down that familiar road. The trees bowed away as an autumn breeze blew softly through the street, carrying the freshly fallen yellow leaves in a swirl of color. The blue sky was beginning to turn red and purple. The low sun dropped just beneath the mountain, casting its rays in a last effort to illuminate the road before me.

As night crept across the sky, I quicken my pace. It's not that I fear the night. I love the night. It's the things that live in the dark that frighten me. The creatures of the night...they move swiftly and quietly. Deadly in everyway. Their sharp claws and horrible hungers. New York at night can be an extremely dangerous place to be at night; especially for someone like me—a small, frail college student, still carrying a book bag. My already fast pace broke out into a dead run as I neared my apartment. The worst was yet to come.

My neighbor is a violent drunk and when he gets drunk the entire floor knows it. His raucous escapades have landed him in the "drunk tank" twice last week. He is never content to contain his violent tendencies in his own apartment. No, he feels it is necessary to share them with everyone. The holes in my wall are a testament to not only his strength, but also his uncontrollability. I finally reach the door to the apartment building. Its red brick walls are a comforting relief.

As soon as I turn the key to the gated door of the building a strong hand grabs me by the arm. I reach to pull at the huge hand pulling me away from the relative safety of my apartment. I twist to see who was assaulting me: none other than my violent neighbor. The smell of bad whisky hits me in the face instantly as he belches loudly in my face. With my free arm I try to escape the death grip that he has on me.

"You're all mine this time" were all I could hear before the brick hit my head. As I lay semi-conscious in a back alley, I wonder what makes the leaves turn red in the fall. I feel numb thuds against the side of my head and side. I suppose it' him hitting me. For some reason I can't feel the brick against my head anymore. A white haze slowly creeps across my vision. The only light I can see is the street light, somewhat dimmed due to the smog and my blurring vision. I barely even notice that he has taken my pants off. I never felt him enter me.

My blank expression remained the same when he finished and passed out. What did make those leaves change red? After what seemed like ages, I tried to sit up. The blood in my mouth tasted metallic. I soon realized that sitting wasn't the best idea for me at that moment. I could see the guiding light of the street light taking me back to my apartment. I walked slowly up the two flights of stairs to my room. I knew that my neighbor was outside passed out in the alley so I didn't worry about sneaking past his door. The flickering lights of the hall only reflected my distraught.

The full realization of what had happened when I looked in the mirror. Blood was dripping down the side of my temple. A large gash was cut across my nose starting above my right eye ending by my mouth. I could not take full breaths—I suspected I had a broken rib. My left eye was beginning to swell. A cold look stole across my face. My usually good-looking features became distorted into a scowl. I ran into the kitchen. I rifled though my drawers until I found my father's only parting gift. "Use it well" he had told me as he gave it to me. I left my apartment so fast I forgot to lock or even clean up my face. As I opened the door to the apartment building, I saw my neighbor, awake and moving.

He walked quickly toward me cackling "Came back for seconds I see! I'll be happy to." He took his last step before I shot him with the .357 my father gave me. His face contorted as a look of shock flashed across. I shot four more times into his falling body. His dead corpse collapsed in a heap. Enraged and invigorated at what I had done, I began to cry hysterically. I glanced down at myself. I am covered in blood, some mine, some his.

I look up toward the sky as if the sun would come out and make everything disappear. The blood in my eye made everything seem a bit reddish. Just like the leaves. Once they were green, alive and bright. But now, the sea of red leaves billows in the wind. They turn red because they die...I fall backwards onto the curb. The gun still in my hand, I understand what I must do. I lift the gun towards my mouth. The barrel is still hot. I burnt my lips.

It doesn't matter anyways. I will turn red just like the leaves...

I have never tweaked in my life. I do, however, give
+2s when deserved. This was cool . . . . .

I'm tweaking really bad right now, so I only read the title, first sentense and saw the picture.

Oh everything's cruel according to you. Keeping him chained us in the
backyard is cruel. Pulling his tail is cruel. Yelling in his ears is
cruel. Everything is cruel. So excuse me if I'm cruel.
