I finally set a date to see my daughter, Emma. My Christmas card last year said I'd be in touch after the holidays. We should see each other again soon. I look forward to it.
Has it been a year already? I never made that call and my telephone number changes so often, Emma's mother can't get a hold of me. So last week I call. On the phone I shake from guilt and nerves. I haven't called or seen her in a year.
I knew when I was pregnant that she was not for me. There was a couple out there in need of a child. I found them. They had already adopted once and wanted another. "Perfect", I thought, "she'll have an older sister". Olivia is only a year or so older than Emma so they'll be close. I liked that.
I didn't see the disadvantages at the time. I know that Olivia's birth mother gives Emma presents, so I always have a gift for Olivia as well. I believe Olivia's birth mother visits more. I wonder, "Will my daughter think that I'm a dead-beat birth mother?"
It's Sunday and I'm making the drive to visit her. I have my gifts wrapped. They're in a bag on the front seat next to the apple pie I bought at the grocery store. The pie is cheap but I feel the need to bring something when I'm invited to their home.
When I get to the door Olivia is already there and yelling to Emma that "Rachael's here!" They're all dressed in their Sunday best. I now feel under dressed. I'm embarrassed that I didn't make the effort to look nicer.
Emma is absolutely gorgeous, which is hardly surprising, seeing as I gave birth to her. She is SO excited to see me. We talk and eat our lunches. Emma mostly talks. Her mother gives me tastes of what it's like having her in their lives. Her life is so busy with piano lessons, soccer, ballet lessons and, of course, Brownies. She's positively radiant or "an exuberant girl" as her mother put it. After we have cake, pictures are brought out. I never got into the whole scrap booking thing but I compliment on how nice it is. I'm looking at a book/photo album that was put together just for Emma. Olivia has one too apparently.
As I turn the pages, my eyes are watering. There's a letter to Emma on the page near her baptism pictures. The mother writes about how grateful she and her husband are. She thanks God for their gift. I decide to take most of the credit. It's so beautiful, the tears are now streaming and Emma tells me not to cry. I tell her about the day I met her parents and her sister. I tell her that I knew they'd be perfect. I knew they'd love her so much and give her all the things I wanted her to have, that she deserved to have.
Emma will be seven years old on Saturday. However, she seemed more mature when she looked me in the eyes and simply replied, "They do".

While I congratulate you on not having them suck her out with a vacuum and crush her skull at 6 weeks, this is NOT good writing and I'm not going to give you a +2 because you "were so brave and made a tough choice" or whatever.
But, you didn't fuck anything up too glaringly, it's just a flat story.

I was gonna rate, then I saw the perfect +2 streak. Then I thought about breaking it, then I thought about not being an ass and giving it a +2 anyways. One of my best friends is adopted, and I wasn't allowed to have contact with his birth mother until he was 18. Now, I think he maybe has meet her once in his life, and she only did it because he wanted her to.
You obviously care about the little creature you created and that is very commendable. Have a +2 for being such a loving mother.

Well, I don't know about you, but I wouldn't give it anything but a plus one. Mostly because her effort is awesome!
I have two cousins who are adopted. When we found out the little one had Muscular Dystrophy (sp?) They tried to contact her birth parents (they also had an open adoption) but they didn't respond to calls or letters.
My cousin's heart was broken. She was only 6 at the time and didn't understand why her birth parents didn't love her.
+2 for anything that makes a child feel loved.

Does the birth father do this too?
-------------
No. Everything was done to try and contact said father, from a legal standpoint. No response.
