According to the article the death toll for U.S troops in Iraq since the War began in March of 03 has just passed the 2,000 mark (for full details
The Pentagon calls this an "artificial mark on the wall" and have made all the usual noises about positive signs for the future and the success of this or that mission but with most impartial experts (and I mean military experts not political ones) saying that there will realistically be at least another 4 years of occupation in Iraq (for the record the average length of counter insurgency situations continuing after the official end of the war in the modern world is 7 years)
I wonder just how many lives will be lost before this is over.
2000 souls dead means there are a lot of people who have lost fathers and sons even mothers and daughters but it is a paltry number when compared to the 58,000 troops lost in Vietnam and the 38,000 in Korea.

I mean....yeah I don't like our servicemen dying.
But...compared to other wars, it could be a lot worse. I'm not a guy who thinks war is bloodless, because thats basically what war is, a bloody conflict, but I do hate to hear about young men dying. And I include in that the young men of Iraq and radical islamic groups, these guys could be raising families not picking up AK-47's.
I'm just saying, keep it in perspective. The death rate isn't that bad. Just think of it as the men we didn't lose in the assualt, we lose in the attrition. It's a dark philosophy but it makes some amount of sense.

When did we change from casualties to fatalities? The number of casualties (dead and greviosly wounded) have to be well into the tens of thousands. Our medicine sure as shit is getting better, but that doesn't mean there aren't alot of amputee soldiers walking around in civillian clothes. Where's a fucking number on that?

Yes, war will always be necessary. Why? Because people are bored. Our technology has outgrown our evolution. We don't have to put nearly as much effort into getting the essentials to survive- so we turn to the next thing in line (Maslow-ly speaking.) Until we are a species of unanimous conformity and social bliss we will always fight.
It's kinda like communism- great idea until you throw people into the mix. You do what you can and the state gives you what you need. The problem is that people inherently want. We want more of what we have or some of what we don't and then more of the some that we get. We're all inherently selfish, shitty creatures. "Lower" animals can at least be justified in the lack of cognizant fore- thought. Instincts: eat, fuck, kill, breathe, protect yourself and your offspring. In retrospect I can't even see why the fuck we're arguing about whether one country is better than another. Personally, I think we all suck. 2000+ voluteers dead, meaning that, depending on who's statistics are quoted, the US/Brit/Iraqi/etc coalition forces are killing between 4 and 50 enemy troops for each casualty being reported every 2 minutes in the crawl at the bottom of the screen on CNN.
At that minimum 4:1 ratio and had the idiots in charge of the Vietnam war hadn't limited how far US troops could chase the enemy, we'd have killed about 800,000 NVA. Or, more than there actually were.
Of course, between March '03 and the present, about 42,500 US citizens did not volunteer to be killed in alcohol-related automobile accidents (based on just over 17,000/yr recent average per the CDC).

Listen these people didn't die in vain. Sure they died in a foriegn country and in a great deal of pain. But not it vain. Your commander and chief knows what he's doing so don't fret. Even if it takes another 2000 men and women it'll still be worth it. One day Iraq will be free of dictators and war lords. And just think when every last insurgent is dead and Bush decalres the war is won (again) we'll all be able to visit their for our holidays. Can't wait.

That's a question that everyone has to ask for him/her self when is the time to kill.
The way I put I think of this: when every alternative has failed, or when it's inevitable that it's either you or them that will die, or when through the use of oppression and tyranny someone seeks to enslave your or your loved ones, that is the time to kill.
Would I have fought in WWII against Japan? Yes.
Would I have fought against Germany in WWII? Yes.
Would I have fought for the independance of the American colonies? That depends. That would have taken some careful consideration, but in the end, yes, I probably would have.
Would I have fought the Native American Indians for control of their traditional lands? No.
Would I have fought in the Korean war, or Vietnam, or Iraq? Absolutely not.
In all cases, it would require a careful consideration of what I thought was right or wrong and whether I truly believed that a greater good would eventually come of it. There is no easy roadmap for that. The reasons men do what they do are as varied as the snowflakes, but I am the only one who answers for what I do.
I cannot control what other men do, but I hope that at least they will think enough to do it for themselves.

Although I'm opposed to our involvement at all, I think if we can't prove that we can kick arse we'll be really fucked. The resistance (on a grand scale) isn't really that large. If we can't prove ourselves capable of knocking out a handful of ragheads with homemade bombs how can we keep up an image of strength to stop our greater enemies from doing what they want?
Honestly, if we quit a war after 2000 casualties will the Chinese really look at us in fear when we threaten action against them when they take Taiwan? And will North Korea back down from nuke-making because of threats by a nation that flees from a piss-poor fight in some Iraqi desert?
Image is worth just as much as substance.

well, I'll grant that my perspective on this has always been a tad extreme, but:
Nuke 'em. Black glass as far as the eye can see. Then, the next country that even considers the idea of unofficially harboring a group the uses terror tactics against *any* country will seriously reconsider. Wave a big, fat, radioactive warhead at them and nod in the general direction of Iraq, raise one eyebrow, and grin.
ok, I feel better now. Though i do agree with the majority here. We started it, now we have to finish it. Counter insurgency is nasty, nasty work; more so in urban environments (cause we still suck at MOUT) but it's gotta be done.
You join the military for any number of reasons: patriotism, eceonomic relief, thrill seeking, or escapism. Whatever the reason any sane person knows what they're getting into. *It's the military* for fuck's sake! If it doesn't occur to you that it might be just a tad dangerous... you'll probably be doing the world a favor in getting shot.
