I just now received my daily word of the day from yesterday, and, as if we couldn't be even more confused by the English language, yesterday's word was:

Word of the Day for Wednesday October 26, 2005

virago \vuh-RAH-go; vuh-RAY-go\, noun:
1. A woman of extraordinary stature, strength, and courage.
2. A woman regarded as loud, scolding, ill-tempered, quarrelsome, or overbearing.

That could be quite a shock to the boys at Yamaha.

Socrates' wife Xanthippe was always presented in philosophy classes as the archetype of a virago, in the modern sense.

I don't think the Yamahas were old enough to have taken the archaic meaning, which seems to have died out somewhere in the patriarchal 19th century. Were they making Yamaha motorcycles in 1849?

Galfridus, feeling very old today

Have you ever seen the site http://www.engrish.com

And we wonder why they get it 'wong' ...

so, a 'Virago' is a fast, out-of-control bitch who wants to take you for a sexy ride and then dump you face-first onto the pavement?

Sounds about right to me...

Yeah as Americans we are quick to throw an insult at someone who can't pronounce the language correctly or well. No thought to the fact that they know more than one language. When I was in Germany it was explained to me that the german language (as are most) are much more rigid and that there is no way they could say something as simple as walking sticking or googling.

WTF are you talking about?

Bart: So, like sometimes you can do stuff that you think is pretty bad
so other kids will like you better?

Homer: You're not talking about killing anyone, are you?
