I can't believe that when asked to state the ten things that define them as a person, all the things that at least two decades have gone into growing, shaping and moulding, that people have listed beer and sport as two key defining charachteristics.

So here is Berty's top ten things that define him and make him extra ace.

1. Back in '01 I did some work experience as a hospital porter at Bet Shemesh General Hospital in Jeruselum. There was a bombing on my third week and casulties where rushed in. I'm not medically trained, I just lugged stuff about, so I spent the day pushing bloody people in and out of theatre. The most poigniant memory was when I was taking a five minute break there was a woman set to oneside of the hall near to me. She'd been marked with a black stripe on her clipboard, a sign that her chances for survival where so unlikely that she was low priority.

She was dying in other words. Alone in that cold, noisy hallway.

So I went over to her and smiled at her, but it was apparent that she couldn't talk. She just looked up at me with these large brown eyes that radiated fear, so I held her hand. Her lower torso was bleeding out through the sheet. There was a lot of blood over her. I reached down and held her. I lost track of time, but after a while I put her down and she was gone.

I can't really say how it affected me, all I know is that it's very important to be touched. To feel someone there. It's a powerful sensation for me.

2. That video of Super Mario Bros 3 being completed in 11 minutes, that is ace.

3. When I was growing up in the 80's my parents got divorced and they took me too a 'specialist' to try and localise the fallout. He had a sandbox that was filled with water and I remember reaching in and finding a E.T. toy in the murk. I asked the guy what it was and he said "whatever you want it to be". That simple sentance got me thinking and later became the basis for my entire thinking on human perception and function.

4. Back in the 80's Dad would take me and my sister to this caravan in anglesey, next to this dairy farm. Every now and then I wandered about the farm and I went into a barn to be confronted by dozens of cows penned into a dirty enclosure. I don't think they where in there to long but I remember watching these animals wading around in shit, pissing everywhere and they kept trying to mount one another. Gave me a rather negative impression of animals to be honest.

5. Sometimes on the weekend's during the early 90's I'd rush in and wake my mum up with a hug. I'd sit with her and chatter inanely whilst she did her hair and I remember feeling dampness on her pillow. It was only until later I realiesed she'd been crying. Over the years it made me think a lot about people's need to hide their fear but also the yearning to have it discovered. Whenever I think of that I think of discovering tears on the pillow.

6. My dreamy, dark eyes.

7. umm..... Beer

8. Er... Sport

9. *scratches head* women's breasts.

10. Alright this is harder than I thought

You spent way too much time on this! It was things that you love or can't do without, not experiences that gave you a paradign shift. But ok, because you did mention Beer :)

+2 for an interesting question.

What defines me as of this moment in time?

1. sense of adventure, and desire to pack as much into my life as possible. Carpe diem baby!
2. independance- being capable of fending for myself in any situation.
3. Undying love of most sports, in particular, rugby.
4. Ambition- once I'm willing to slow down my travel, I want to build a business from the ground up. For the challenge, not the money. I want people to speak my name 10 generations from now because I did something great/worth remembering.
5. Fierce loyalty to close friends and family, especially my dad and brothers.
6. My love of a bet and a beer, and combining those 2 things.
7. Having an open mind- a direct result of having travelled around and seen a bit of the world.
8. Old fashioned views and values- ie I believe that women & men have different strengths and weaknesses. I wouldn't ask a woman to carry my heavy luggage, I'd be disappointed if she asked me to re-hem her trousers.
9. My word is my bond. If I give you my word I won't repeat something you tell me, I don't repeat it. Period.
10. Love of being outdoors

It's interesting that this post is here because I asked myself that question this morning.

It's not a question anyone can answer truthfully in a public forum because the question becomes "what defines you to other people" as it's impossible to expect people to honestly disclose their fears and weaknesses. After all, bad things are shameful. Thats why rape victims try to commit suicide.

So, what really defines us is pain and suffering. It is through pain and suffering that we limit ourselves. If a male is lonely he knows that in reality all he needs to do is go out to a nightclub and shove his hands on a drunk/pilled up female. If a woman feels ugly or lonely, she knows that all she needs to do is go and get drunk/pilled up at a nightclub. They don't though, because of fear. Fear of consequences and fear of what has gone before. Fear created by pain and suffering, either directly or indirectly.

Where we are unbound by fear and suffering we are limitless, capable of massive change and chaotic leaps. We're not idiots though, we know that you can only try and run so fast without falling over.

So what's that 'we're' I mentioned? How is it defined? What does it mean? Does it mean that if we don't know we'll fall over if we pump our legs too hard then we won't? Can't do, because little kids fall over all the time. I'm not going to answer this question because it would take to long and distract us all from my original, and very eloquently written, point.

Here you go. Here's mine..

1. Being happy when being alone
2. Ability to do (or at the very least try) everything from plastering to baking to playing instruments to understanding HOW things work.
3. Being able to look how I like without any fears of people judging me because I honestly don't care.
4. Being in a relationship with my best friend.
5. Being of that wonderful age where you are strong enough to say no. And to mean it.
6. Having dreams/plans/direction and not only lots to look forward to but lots to enjoy in the meantime. Appreciating the journey more than the destination.
7. Being positive and optimistic with a dogged determination.
8. Being aware that if you expect nothing from people other than yourself, you won't be disappointed but might be pleasantly suprised sometimes.
9. Knowing the beauty of nature and what it is.
10. Not being scared of dying.
