She sat on the couch and looked at the wine glass as she passed a finger backwards and forwards over the rim. Sue was on her third large glass of the local wine merchants finest chardonnay and was already half way though this one.

Upstairs the sound of her daughters Bess and Allie playing kept her happy enough to know they were safe and content. They knew she was sad; had known for a while but they left her alone in her immaculately decorated living room.

Her laptop computer hummed quietly on the table. She was half way though a piece for her seven year degree though the Open University in literature and she loved it. It worked well with her part time job as a teacher. Sue was proud of all the hard work she's done over the years, but she couldn't work tonight. She felt like she couldn't ever work again at this moment.

At seven o'clock Sue got up and picked up the James Blunt c.d. that 'he' had bought for her. She closed her eyes briefly, forcing the tears back for now. She didn't want the children to see her cry.

She wandered into the kitchen, draining her wine glass and already heading to the fridge to open another bottle. As she poured herself another glass, slopping half of it over the table, her new little Vodafone mobile beeped. A text!

As she sat down at the polished kitchen table to read the message, nine year Allie came flying in the room laughing, her mousy brown hair flying wildly behind her. Grabbing her scented pens off the table she was off pounding up the stairs, yelling to her sister as she went "I've got them".

*HI SUE. IT'S ME. I AM SO SORRY ABOUT YESTERDAY; I HAVE SPOKEN 2 LORIE AND ITS OVER BETWEEN US. IT'S U I LOVE. XXX*

Before Sue had even finished reading, just the knowledge of knowing the message actually was from him, had the tears already threatening.

She got some cheese and crackers out of the fridge and mindlessly ate a few. She hadn't eaten since yesterday morning.

Taking a swig of the chilled wine, she got up and went back into the quiet sitting room, putting the James Blunt song 'Cry' on. This was their song. He had bought her the c.d. She sat and sang the song all the way though and thought of John.

She was 42 and in her pain she felt like an eighteen year old. This wasn't fair. She didn't deserve this.

She thought what to reply, because although she hated him right now, she knew she would reply. That little contact, that connection. Without it she had nothing.

She thought back to yesterday.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She had received a note though her door telling her that the man she had been seeing for the last two years was already with someone else. For the last seven years. And this woman, Lorie.... had basically told her to back off.
Sue couldn't believe it. A failed marriage, although resulting in two beautiful girls, a couple of disasters that had hurt her deeply had left her licking her wounds for three years, and now this. She had told herself never again, but.... he had said she was special. He seemed to understand her more than anyone before. They had become friends. Then lovers. Defences down, emotions laying as bare as a newly born babe, she went headlong into a wonderful two year relationship.
And now this.
After giving the girls their tea, Sue picked up the phone and dialled a number. "Hello" the cheery voice of her best friend Tracy answered. "Hiya, it's me" Sue said quietly. "Can I drop the girls off to play with yours for an hour or so? there's somewhere I have to pop out to". Sue knew her friend wouldn't let her down.
Half an hour later Sue was in her shiny new Mini. After having dropped the delighted children off with their friends, she had refused to go in to see Tracy. She had a mission. And Tracy would have seen how drunk she was.
It had recently stopped raining and the traffic was clear as Sue drove straight to Lorie's house. She knew where she lived. After all, she's been living in Greenville for thirty years. There weren't many people she didn't know.
The very moment she saw his car parked outside Lories' house her blood began to boil. In a second she was out and hammering on the door.
"JOHN! Get out here, you fucker". "You complete wanker I want to speak to you" Sue shouted at the top of her voice. She didn't see the neighbours' curtains twitching. She just wanted him to get out of that house. Tears blinded her. She knew they were in there.
In her drunken stupidity she ran over to his brand new Mercedes and leapt up onto the bonnet. Shouting obscenities at the house she kicked at the windscreen in her heeled shoes.
A curtain moved at the posh white house and Lorie opened the window of the bedroom. "Fuck off you fat cow" she yelled.
Sue didn't hear. She was too busy kicking the hell out of John's car.
The rain had started again but she didn't notice that either. She was oblivious until the blue lights of the police car lit her up like a beacon.
She was hauled to the police station and thrown in a cell for the night. Her one phone call was to her friend Tracy. She asked her to take care of the girls and to call a friend, Kevin, to pick her up in the morning.
She sat and stared at the wall of the cell, her head pounding, horror creeping in through her rapidly sobering mind of what she had done. What he had driven her to.
An intelligent woman. A mum. A sister. A friend. A nice person. Losing her mind over a relationship? Over a cheating man? Unbelievable.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Back in the living room, Sue drained the last dredges of wine and went upstairs to change. The girls were being picked up by their father in half an hour so she was free tonight.

Twenty minutes later, having kissed Allie & Bess goodnight and telling them she'll see them in a few days, she was dressed.

She was wearing her favourite dress, the black one that John loved so much. A slick of lip gloss, a quick spray of 'Flower' by Kenzo and she was ready.

She picked up her mobile and pressed the little buttons with a reply.

*THE KIDS ARE OUT. I'M AT HOME AND CAN'T WAIT 2 SEE U. SEE U IN HALF AN HOUR XX*

Within seconds the phone was beeping an excited reply. He was coming.

Sue turned off the TV left on by the children and switched on a c.d. of HER old favourites. Those favourite songs that reminded her of herself. She needed to feel strong.

She wandered into the kitchen and waited.

Fifteen minutes later the doorbell rang. Sue smiled as she ran her hands over her curves, smoothing down the silky material of the dress and picking up the sharp cheese knife.

Oh yes her had driven her to this.

An intelligent woman. A mum. A sister. A friend.

A normal woman.

Driven to this...... driven to kill.

Some minor imperfections. The end was somewhat predictable, would like to have seen even a minor twist thrown in there to spice things up.

Could have used another proof read.

ie. "She was half way though a piece for her seven year degree though the Open University in literature and she loved it"

This part doesn't read so well.

That aside, still deserves a plus rating.

I felt so let down at the end. It was great in the begining, the middle was triumphant and the end was Coronation Street.

Lovely use of simple description.

It all happened at the beginning of that turbulent decade known as the
eighties. Those were idealistic days: the candidacy of John Anderson,
the rise of Supertramp. It was an exciting time to be young.
