Creeping like nightmare rot, like nightmare thoughts. That's how the line goes. He had received a smile from her on that one. And a smile is all that mattered. These days that lasted so much longer than the ones before, the dawn stretching out. Like someone had opened a can of sunlight and poured it all over the world. It gave him a sad little feeling somewhere inside those old bones. As the days got longer, his time grew shorter.
He sat off to the side of her, watching, waiting. That was all he could do in these situations. Watch and wait, and of course, learn. He had so much to learn from the young ones. The elderly never want to remember that. They have as much to be taught from the youth as the youth have to gleam from their years of wisdom. But age makes you stern and angry and set in your ways. Fortunately, he was not like that.
The spiders were everywhere again. He really should do something about that. Not that the child minded, for she could spend hours naming the hideous things. Not your basic of monikers, either. Honorable titles like Fabian, Gabriel, Nicodemus, Arianna, and Genevieve. None the less, the foul things could be seen scurrying about her bed and the stuffed animals that clung precariously to the window sill. You never knew what secrets they could be transferring to other households.
She was currently reading silently to herself, her lips moving only slightly over the larger words in the cuneiform tablet. She probably had forgotten her grandfather was even in the room, so swept away by the stories. Tales of ancient gods and monsters, heroes and human sacrifices. Beautiful bed times stories for a beautiful little girl. He brushed her still damp hair back from her forehead to look upon her.
Her large blue eyes took up so much of her small round porcelain face. They moved across the tablet with speed and wit far beyond her seven years upon this planet. Little more than the nub of a nose stuck out in the middle, and delicate pale lips still whispered the words to the Summerian. How he loved his granddaughter.
Quietly he rose and went to the window. Looking out upon the graveyard he thought about his wife for a moment. If her resurrection had been a success, she too would have to see this wonderful little girl, so full of life. Alas, by the time a proper Necromancer had been found, her body had become to badly decomposed. He thought back to the times when they had raised all three of their children, and the times they had had together. Such memories. Two girls and a boy. This was his middle child's youngest and what a delight she was. Marissa and her husband could not have children and Gregory had no special woman in his life.
Little Rowan and her older brother Killian were his only grandchildren.
It seemed like there was so much he wanted to impart onto these young ones. So much protection, so much knowledge. He wished he could be here with them forever, seeing them grow up and see who they would eventually become. That idea fascinated him. They already had such developed personalities, but to see where they would go in life. He had hoped, prayed really, that he would still be able to watch their progress after he had passed on into the darker side.
He closed the blinds to block out the coming sun. Turning, he found Rowan yawning, her eyes half lidded but still valiantly searching out each next letter on the tablet. Her curiosity knew no bounds. He maneuvered his way back to the bed and carefully slid the tablet from her hands as another yawn escaped her lips. He rolled back the enormous comforter and helped her crawl her way under the covers. He kissed her on the forehead twice and prepared to leave the room, flipping the lights as he left.
"G'night, Poppy," Rowan said.
"Good night, my dear."

An interesting little story. You could take it further if you had the desire to.

That's not the name he said. He used Jen-uh-veeve.
