You think that he or she is the only person who could ever make you feel that way. You speak about it as if it's tangible. "We're in love. We love each other. What we have is really special." You think it's magical, but its not.
All these feelings are hallucinations. Hallucinations caused by the cocktail of drugs your brain is releasing into your blood stream every day, every time you think about that person. Love is dopamine, phenylethylamine, oxytocin and norepinephrine.
Norepinephrine is responsible for aggression and (interestingly) depression. When combined with dopamine (which takes the edge out of the aggression) and phenylthylamine (the main "love" drug, also found in chocolate). Norepinephrine leads to that feeling of infatuation. These drugs last anywhere from six months to three years. The oxytocin is what makes you want to cuddle. It's also what gets released during multiple orgasms. Imagine if you could buy that stuff.
So, if the chemicals of puppy love wear off after 3 years, what is it that keeps us in love?
C'mon, I'm asking you. How many people here have been married for more than three years and still in love? My parents certainly aren't.
Can love ever last forever?

Then what is it that causes that rush of chemicals when you think about that one person and only that one person? And how do you shut it off? What makes it happen even when you feel utter hatred for them, feel pain, betrayal and rejection? Why does the chemical rush keep on happening, only for them, when your brain tells you otherwise?

but it has actually been shown that your brain undergoes a sort of...change once you have found your "true love"
i really dont want to get into the study here but it is quite fascinating.

I've been with my wife for 10 years now and we've been married for 5 of them, I'm more in love with her now than I have ever been.
It's not that butterfly in the stomach (well sometimes when she's naked and bent over) but more of the 'when there is something wrong or right she is the first person I want around' type of love.
