SURREY, B.C. (CP) - Regina CFL player Trevis Smith was freed on $10,000 bail Wednesday on a charge of aggravated sexual assault.
Other conditions imposed by the judge stipulate that Smith must keep the peace, not attend any nightclubs or bars, obey a curfew of 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., not be alone with any female under the age of 14 except his wife and family, and have no contact or visits with any complainants. He is to use reasonable precautions and practise safe sex, tell all future partners that he is HIV-positive, have no involvement in the sex trade, use condoms and surrender his passport if he has one.
Crown prosecutor Maurizio D'Attilo took about 30 minutes to outline the case against Smith and a publication ban was imposed on the details.
While Smith is relatively unknown in British Columbia, Harasen said he is a high-profile player in Saskatchewan.
The former member of the Alabama Crimson Tide, a top-ranked NCAA U.S. college football team, Smith now is the Roughriders' longest-serving import player.
Harasen said Smith was pulled over by the RCMP on his way to practice on Friday.
"He was very surprised," he said.
In an unusual move, the RCMP disclosed that Smith is HIV-positive, saying it was a public safety issue.
Police urged anyone who may have had sexual contact with Smith to get tested for possible exposure to the virus, and to contact the RCMP in connection with the investigation.
Police haven't released any information about the health of the woman who made the original complaint to police.
