The best epic of the modern age finally resumes. After a five year hiatus George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire latest installment is due to hit bookstores in a mere two weeks.
A review of the first book 'A Game of Thrones.'

The second, 'A Clash of Kings.'

The third, 'A Storm of Swords.'

The fourth, 'A Feast for Crows.'

The only other fantasy epic that is on the same level as Martin's magnum opus is Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. Read this series, you'll be glad you did.

The Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn trilogy by Tad Williams was always one of my favorites.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Memory, Sorrow and Thorn is my absolute favorite trilogy of all time . . . right up until the very end, which is probably the most anti-climactic climax a 10,000 page trilogy has ever had.
I'm also a sucker for anything by Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman. (Original Dragonlance series is where I got started in this genre and the Death Gate Cycle was a pretty good series too.)

Martin fucking ROCKS.
Jordan is all over the place with pointless and draaaaaaaaaaaawn out minutia.
Goodkind? Goodkind JUST FUCKING SUCKS. (Okay, the Shanaria stuff was okay)
For my money the Fire and Ice Trillogy is THE BEST AVAILABLE in the fantasy genre.
(As long as you can stomach incest, a high body count, and an painful burning eternity between books.)

Teeph,
Goodkind wrote(s) The Wizards first rule series NOT the Shannara Books.
You're thinking of Terry BROOKS

I remember when I used to read books. Hmmmm.
I also remember when I started reading the Dark Tower trilogy, thinking it was a complete set, many years ago. Then book three ended on a cliffhanger and I was like, WHAT THE FUCK?? Until a billion years later when the fourth book came out which I didn't bother getting because I couldn't remember a single thing from the first three anymore. I should really re-read those.
The Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn trilogy by Tad Williams was always one of my favorites.

I actually don't play role playing games (anymore, besides the World of Darkness universe was much much better.)

For some reason I've never read any of his books.
I'm a big, big fan of David Eddings, Terry Goodkind, Robert Jordan, David Gemmell etc.....
How does he compare?
Eddings is kids stuff compared to Jordan (although I couldn't agree with Methods assesment more)and Goodkind I never cared for. I have never even heard of Gemmell.

what about WoT?
----------------------------------------------------------
That series fell apart before book five. I just read Knife of Dreams, and Jordan is still flailing about trying to pull the loose ends together.
Looking forward to Martin and Erikson though.

As for the LOTR comparison, I think that this series is deeper and more expansive in that it has alot more characters involved and the character development knocks LOTR out of the water.
I'm kind of happy that they'll never make a movie based on this series, they would have to split it into 6 or 7 movies at least, and STILL cut out a whole lot.
I might have to say that this is one of the top three fantasy series I have read to date, aside from the Stephen King Dark Tower series and LOTR.
