Oh...crazy English pronunciation...I once visited a town called Wymondham near Norwich. Wymondham is pronounced Windam, and Norwich is pronounced Norrich.

Warwick is swell, too.

Yeah, we saw the trebuchet being fired, or launched or whatever the correct term is. It was pretty fucking cool. Didn't take a picture of it because I didn't think I could get close enough to capture the sheer scale of the thing.

---

We watched it being fired as well, then went and had a look at it after the demonstration.
It really is unbelievably huge, was amused by the hamster wheel things the people had to walk in to lower the counterweight.

Tres cool.

I was at Warwick castle last month.

Have you seen the trebuchet they've got over by the mill? It's really amazing, in a giant wooden thingy chucking rocks kind of way.

The top of Guys Tower is a perfect spot for having a smoke and a moment of quiet reflection / spitting over the side.

most castles of that era had spiral staircases in that fashion. they curved to the right to prevent invaders from easy use of their sword arms.

I enjoyed those last two pics the most. I'm not sure why, but I've always felt a lot more comfortable on the first day of autumn than the first day of spring. And I mean the first "real" day when you really know summer's over, not necessarily the day on the calendar.

I really feel at peace when it's a drab and misty/rainy kind of day. I find that Castles look there very best with that kind of backdrop.

Okay, ramble over.

Been to Edinburgh castle, but not many besides. Considering all Brits live in castles the mystery of them sort of vanishes.

I didn't hear the screaming voice falling off the ramparts. I was too young to be told about it so they shipped we young 'uns off to the souvenier shop or something. My Dad heard it though. That would have kicked ass.

How does anyone ever resist the urge to push the person next to them off the top of the tower? I mean seriously... just looking at the pics makes my palms itch and the word "defenestrate" sing in the high, empty vaults of my mind.

Incidentally, those things look they'd stand up to a terrorist truck bomb a lot better than some prefab office block. Maybe it's time to rexamine the value of stone-built, serf-tested living and workspaces. It'd sure make the cities look more interesting.

Much as I would love to be the inspiration for a certain amount of heat upon this fair lady's post, I do not currently have the requisite time available to erect a temporary outdoor dwelling in this particular area this fine evening.

Rest assured that should this post be verging on most heated when I return to the realms of Ubersite, I shall make my best effort to ensure that it achieves the status which it truly deserves.

In other Dave related news, I will be able to consume an alcoholic beverage once more in 52 days. (Yes I am counting).

When I first came here, this was all swamp. Everyone said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp. So I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So I built a third. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. And that's what you're going to get, Lad, the strongest castle in all of England.

+2 for not going with the obvious Monty Python reference.

You have chosen a very nice motive. The shots are very good considering angle, exposure, aperture settings and after all their pulchritudity. I really like them. Sad it was a rainy winter day. Colourful mornig light would have made them even more than extraordinary. And that is what I think of them. They are extraodinary. Just beautiful.
