They had reached the ultimate in success: The ability to create new and complex life forms using bits and pieces of DNA, in layman's terms.
There was soon to be a grand unveiling- two lives, created in secret, reared in absolute seclusion, a mystery of perfection, a labor of love. The world held its collective breath, full of conjecture... what are they? Where on earth was it taking place? As the date approached, rumors abounded, and tabloid presses ran amok. Humanity spoke of almost nothing else.
All that was known of this wondrous surprise was that it would be "A crown on the achievements of mankind; a symbol of hope, peace, and joy for generations to come. This is a blessing created by humans alone, and given to the human race."
Unfortunately, nobody was able to witness this joyous, beastly revelation. One month before the debut, humanity was stricken with a plague, a pestilence, a contagion the likes of which the world had never known or indeed anticipated. One by one, they drifted into Elysium. In their beds, in their vehicles, in their workplaces, they expired, until the land was full of the stench of decay. Only those humans who had abided in the most remote areas, the uncivilized and unclaimed corners of the earth, were spared.
Silence. Unearthly silence, save for the cackling predations of those animals who make their rightful living from death. Slowly, the land again became its own master. Freed from the shackles of humanity, Anima Mundi renewed its embrace.
One thousand years passed.
Deep in the primeval forest of what was once Czechoslovakia, far away from the shunned Cities of Death, the New People waited. They waited in the clearing, near the ancient path, in the twilight. They could hear the distant rumble, and they trembled with delight and anticipation. Closer and closer it came, and the verdant forest floor shook with its approach. They tossed flowers into the path, singing and swaying.
The old ones wept with joy, knowing another cycle was completed; the childless prostrated themselves; the newly joined held hands. All were struck dumb with awe and reverence. The blessing of unicorns thundered down the path, past the clearing where the New People waited.
Life would continue.
Note: A herd of unicorns is called a "blessing".

"What you did is forbidden."
"Who says so?"
"It is known, Lili. These are sacred animals. You risk your immortal soul."
"I only wanted to touch one. Where is the harm in that?"
