That's a very loose application of the definition of irony, BTG. If I'm willingly doing something that I'm known to speak against that's hypocrisy. If I tell people to always wear their seat belts, then I get in a car wreck and burn to death because the seatbelt trapped me, that's irony.

Firstly, "hypocrasy" is the word. Secondly, I'm not saying ditch it altogether, I'm just saying that you, in another way that you're just like Bill Simmons, are almost deathly reliant on references to popular culture. I do it, we all do, and it's not the ONLY thing you do, but whenever I read something by you and you say anything along the lines of "...list *character* from *movie*..." it bothers the hell out of me.
It's letting other people do your writing for you. Instead of expounding on your own characters and feelinng, you'll just liken them to someone the reader is already familiar with. It's lazy. Fucking David Rakoff wouldn't stop doing it in his book and it pissed me off.
Referential humor has its place, definitely, I mean we both know I love Family Guy, but it's one of the reasons I can't stand to read Bill Simmons anymore and one of the reasons I find it harder to read your stuff anymore. I just don't go for the referential shit.
