Oh man this song just popped up on my music player, and it always brings back memories.

The intro is so soft and welcoming - the violins, the piano - it's like the song is trying to say, "Come on in, I'm your friend."

Then in busts Axl Rose, to serenade, singing, "If you wanna love me, then darlin' don't refrain."

Yeah, everyone needs some time on their own, all alone. And it is hard to keep an open heart, when even friends seem out to harm you.

I can't help but see the video in my mind every damn time I hear this song. My reflexes also force me to turn up the volume, no matter where I am, and grab something to pretend that it's a microphone, and sing my heart out.

And the guitar solo by Slash? Gives me fucking goose bumps every single time.

The background singers remind me of the voices of angels. The only thing sweeter to my sense of hearing is the voice of Mr. Rose himself.

The violins again!

Oh no, why is the music becoming harder and darker?

The violins are angry!

Electric guitar, your sounds make me feel funny in my pants.

Everybody needs somebody, you're not the only one.

The first time I heard that song, I was making out with this guy who was a guitarist in my neighbor's attic. I think I was all of 15 years old. I think the guy thought he was an awesome kisser, because the song gave me goose bumps.

Very few songs can follow that one successfully, which is why I think they don't play it on the radio any more. I mean, after a song like that, you can't hear just any old Metallica or AC/DC crap, and having commercials just ruins the mood and emotions it evokes.

Viva el Guns 'n' Roses! Too bad Axl's a freak now.

The acoustic version of November Rain on .44caliber Horticulture was much better.

missedthepoint - appreciated the "Estranged" lyrics, great song. Just went through them with my inner Axl.

Did ya know Axl wanted that song on Appetite for Destruction, but it was put on hold cause it didn't mesh with the rest of the album? True story.

Oh, and the greatest power ballad is "Nobody's Fool," silly.

Sorry...I just couldn't help it...

Estranged.

When you're talkin to yourself
And no one is home
You can fool yourself
You came in this world alone
(Alone)

So nobody ever told you baby
How it was gonna be
So what'll happen to you baby
Guess we'll have to wait and see

Old at heart but I'm only 28
And I'm much too young
To let love break my heart
Young at heart but it's getting much too late
To find ourselves so far apart

I don't know how you're s'posed
To find me lately
An what more could tou ask from me
How could you say that I never needed you
When you took everything
Said you took everything from me

Young at heart an it gets so hard to wait
When no one I know can seem to help me now
Old at heart but I musn't hesitate
If I'm to find my own way out

Still talkin' to myself
and nobody's home
(Alone)

So nobody ever told us baby
How it was gonna be
So what'll happen to us baby
Guess we'll have to wait and see

When I find out all the reasons
Maybe I'll find another way
Find another day
With all the changing seasons of my life
Maybe I'll get it right next time
An now that you've been broken down
Got your head out of the clouds
You're back down on the ground
And you don't talk so loud
An you don't walk so proud
Any more, and what for

Well I jumped into the river
Too many times to make it home
I'm out here on my own, an drifting all alone
If it doesn't show give it time
To read between the lines
'Cause I see the storm getting closer
And the waves they get so high
Seems everything We've ever known's here
Why must it drift away and die

I'll never find anyone to replace you
Guess I'll have to make it thru, this time- Oh this time
Without you

I knew the storm was getting closer
And all my friends said that I was high
But everything we've ever known's here
I never wanted it to die

I never understood why Axl chose to wear white hot pants.

Or a kilt

Or that headband.

It was the 80's/early 90s i guess.

That's a great song though.

it's a good song. but absolutely not the greatest rock ballad of all time.

"then what is?" you may ask.

to that, I say: "Ballad of Youth" by Richie Sambora

<muffled laughter>

ok....seriously....."18 and life" by skid row.
