As American civilization has continued to evolve, issues related to sexual orientation and tolerance have emerged, attracting nationwide public concern. Until recent decades, sexuality itself has been a taboo subject. The timeless timidity regarding investigation by scientists and education of the general public about sex may be attributed to several religions' strongly encouraged suppression of sexual urges throughout generations, or simply the fact that girls have cooties. Suppression of sexual urges through the ages has consequently emphasized suppression of sexual variations such as homosexuality. Only in recent decades has the homosexual community felt empowered enough to stand its ground and announce its presence to the nation, allowing people to "come out of the closet" without feeling alone and afraid of a world that misunderstands them. One prominent example of this transition from society's generally ignoring or suppressing homosexuality to striving for tolerance is the gay marriage "conundrum." Many people believe that allowing homosexuals to marry and raise children will disrupt the traditional "family unit" (man, woman, children) that eons ago, certain religions decided is the best or healthiest way to organize a family. On the other hand, countless studies have shown that same-sex parents have the same capability of raising healthy, "normal" offspring as do typical husband-wife parents. However, this article is not about gay marriage, or even homosexuality specifically.

While people who support gay marriage and organizations that promote sexual tolerance abound, America still only sees the tip of the iceberg. Apparently, current "common knowledge" among Americans assumes that most people are heterosexual. This assumption carries another: that men are only aroused by physical characteristics that typically display youthfulness and fertility (i.e. nudity and/or sexy butts, breasts, legs, muscles, eyes etc.) and the prospect of sex in the near future ("Hey, big boy... will you help me unsnap my stockings?"). Unfortunately, nobody has much of a clue regarding what "typically" arouses women. Good male genes, I guess. Anyway, the accepted "knowledge" that most people are heterosexual and become aroused only for reasons directly related to sexual intercourse is completely inaccurate (Note to self: work on finding statistical evidence). In the twenty-first century, Americans are dead-set in our morals: we nobly fight for acceptance of homosexuals, bisexuals, transsexuals, et al. Ironically, we the people are leaving a massive population in the closet.

Estimates show that __(insert statistic)__ people nation/worldwide have developed psychosexual variations known as fetishes. A fetishist may be defined as a person (usually male) who has a sexual fascination or obsession with an inanimate object (often clothing, such as high-heeled shoes or underwear) or typically non-sexual body part or function. While some fetishes develop "from early childhood experiences in which an object was associated with a particularly powerful form of sexual arousal or gratification"(Psychology Today), other theories "focus on later childhood and adolescence and the conditioning associated with masturbation activity." Like homosexuality, fetishism develops without any decision or fault whatsoever by the person affected. And yet, the general populace continues to view fetishists as creepy or weird, portraying them in a completely negative light. Psychology Today says:

"Studies show that fetishists have poorly developed social skills, are isolated in their lives and have a diminished capacity for establishing intimacy.

Behavioral learning models suggest that a child who is the victim or observer of inappropriate sexual behaviors learns to imitate and is later reinforced for the behavior. Compensation models suggest that these individuals are deprived of normal social sexual contacts and thus seek gratification through less socially acceptable means. In the far more common cases, involving males, the patterns suggest that causes stem from doubts about ones own masculinity, potency, and a fear of rejection and humiliation. By his fetishistic practices... the individual apparently safeguards himself and also compensates for some of his feelings of inadequacy."

While it is apparent that social isolation is a result of the fetishist's lack of acceptance, the issue of introducing society to the idea of fetishism tolerance inspires a new set of questions. Humans are animals too, and evolve; is it possible that fetishism is an evolutionary disadvantage, so human nature (which cannot be overridden) is programmed to shun it? While "yes" may be the obvious answer, the same question applies to homosexuality. Can American tolerance, which supports homosexuals despite the likelihood that homosexuality is an evolutionary disadvantage, therefore overriding human nature, which would be to discourage it, do the same for fetishists?

took your time to do this.

There's an empty spot I've always had inside me. I tried to fill it with
family, religion, community service. But those were all dead ends. I
think this chair is the answer.
