Canada seems to be in some very troubled times these days. Forget the States and Bush, at least they have a clear and somewhat competent leader of the country (that is, he doesn't let the entire nation fall to pieces even when he's leading a war overseas). Canada has no such luck, and it looks as though a winter election in January is all but certain.
I am old enough to vote, but I can't bring myself to choose who I would actually be willing to vote for. The only vote I can agree with is a vote of no confidence, adn the Conservatives and NDP already beat me to that. I am so sick of listening to the Liberals apologize for the sponsorship scandal that I have lost all faith in our politicians. Not the system itself, but those currently representing our parties.
I refuse to vote for the Conservatives. Mike Harris made a ruin out of Ontario's education and health systems in the 90s, and I absolutely will not support a party that he was a member of. While in general I have no huge qualms with Conservative politics in general, the terrible mishandling of Ontario by our former Premier has led me to boycott that Canadian political party for the rest of my life. The current party supports huge tax cuts (just like Bush), claiming that they would stimulate the economey (just like Bush claimed). I don't agree with this, even thought it is true that there would be a small positive benefit from lowering corporate taxes. Just because we now have budget surplus doesn't mean we should slow down our profit accumulation.
I refuse to vote for the Bloc Quebecois, partly because I'm not even able to vote for them. They only have candidates in Quebec. This party is a separatist party, campaigning for Quebec to separate from Canada. If anyone can explain how a SEPARATIST PARTY can run in a FEDERAL ELECTION, I would love to hear it. It's like allowing a member of the KKK to become Prime Minister of South Africa. Everything this party supposedly campaigns for is a smoke screen over the fact that they want to destroy something integral to Canada: the French/English duality. Yes, there are problems, but just like divorce, separating from a country just because you feel like you're underappreciated is like decapitating yourself to get rid of dandruff.
I don't know if I should vote for the NDP. They're so left wing and receive so few votes that it would essentially be wasted. They will not for a very long time get enough votes to ever be a true presence in the House, so unless I can convince the entire population of Ontario to vote for them I doubt it would come to much.
Fringe parties like the Green party are tempting, they follow suit with the NDP. They're too radical and not well-known enough to warrant a significant amount of support.
And the Liberals. While I support all the "big issues" (universal health care and education, pro-choice, allow homosexual marriage, against Star Wars, pissed off about the Americans' rejection of the NAFTA ruling on the softwood lumber dispute), I'm undecided about some of the not so big ones, like the possibility of an elected Senate, proportional representation, etc. I'm also so disappointed in the Liberals over the sponsorship scandal and their handling of the affair after the fact that I just don't know if I can put my faith in them anymore. Chretien did a good job for his part, but Paul Martin is mucking things up proper.
If I could I would vote for nobody. Not that I wouldn't vote, but I wouled cast a vote which said that I did not support any of the parties currently available for selection, and that I believed they shoud seriously rethink their strategies. If that vote were available, just imagine how many more people would vote.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks Harper looks like a little nazi. As with any election in any democratic country, this is a case of voting for the "lesser of the evils". We're going to hate whoever we elect & grumble about what they're doing to the country.
I don't think the NDP will be voted in anytime soon, at least not here in Ontario. The scars of Rae Days are still too fresh. *waiting for a slew of insults from Caul for being an anglo from Ontario*. The conservatives don't have much more of a chance because of Mike Harris (that and "Heil Harper" is a scary campaign slogan). The Liberals, as people have said, are what people fall back on.
I don't know if I'm going to bother. I did the last time and, in essence, threw my vote away. I think we're doomed to repeat history over and over.

I'm voting Green this time. I don't care if anyone thinks I'm 'wasting my vote' either. If more people were willing to 'waste' their votes then maybe there would be some changes for the better.

The sad part is, in a system wo corroded as ours (where one party is large enough and well-known enough that a large number of people will vote for them), those who say "I'm not wasting my vote" are actually right. I think I'll vote for NDP, because they stand for most issues that I agree with, and every party had a stage where nobody believed in them...we have to become the change we wish to see in the world.

Canada used to be the #1 livable country, according to the UN. Now we're like 8th or 9th, even below the United States (so much for our patronizing, eh?) So the surplus we have are an illusion. The federal government has cut severly on UI and on their healthcare contribution. They can't even justify where they get these surplus anymore. This empoverishes the provinces and I think they do so to create an impression of economical dependance, that we couldn't live by ourselves if we separated.

No shit, pal. Every time I talk to my dad about what's going on up there he goes on on these obscene rants. He did 25 years in the Air Force, served as part of the UN in the Middle East, worked for the DND, and every time he turns around another fucking Liberal is cutting his pension and medical benefits. Very sad.
===
Sorry to hear that. I wish that happened to you, not your dad. :-)
The liberal party has been around for so long, they do whatever the hell they want. It's like a monarchy.
I think I might vote Conservative. Still not sure. I know the Bloc will win in my circumscription anyway, but people who vote with the mass or say "I'm not wasting my vote" should be hanged on the spot.

"When in doubt, vote liberal" This should be Canadian motto. They are the only party with a nation wide visibility.
Gilles Duceppes didn't win all seats in Québec. Some Montreal neighborhoods are very liberal. But he is indeed doing everything he can to dismantle this country. All he hopes for is a conservative victory to further push away Quebecers from the federation.

I don't know who to vote for yet, but in the upcoming years, this country will face pretty big challenges.
I talked about a whole lot of nothing, I know :-)

grade 10 civics class? If so: that's a joke.
If not: I don't know. It's just a detail and I'm sure the curriculum run by the government doesn't want to promote kids to not vote for anyone. They'd much rather you vote for them.

That option is available man. Just don't check any boxes and they count it as a vote for none of them, but it isn't discarded; they keep records of all the people who didn't vote for any of the parties.
