I saw them when I walked in that night.
Although it was somewhere I'd never been before, it was your typical bar. It was long, dark, and smokier than I'd have liked. There were a group of drunks yelling at a football game on the TV over the bar. There were a handful of young couples doing the post dinner drink ritual. There were the single male vultures ogling at everything that walked by in a skirt.
And They were there, too.
They were dancing along to a cliche of a love song blaring a little too loud from the jukebox that was a little too outdated.
Of all the people in the bar that night, they were the only two dancing.
I was certain they didn't see me slip in the bar that night and sit there in the corner closest to the door. I'm pretty sure they weren't noticing much at that point, other than each other. She was wrapped up in his arms, kissing his neck, his cheek, the side of his face. Kissing him in a way I couldn't remember her ever kissing me.
I'd never seen him before. She, I knew.
But I knew it couldn't be her.
It couldn't be her in this place. She hates dark, smokey bars. We never come to places like this. She hates the way they made her feel, she hates the way they made her clothes smell. She hates anything to do with the drinking and dancing and smoking.
It couldn't be her in that outfit. She doesn't even own any stiletto heels like the ones the woman dancing was wearing. She barely buys a skirt that touches her knees, much less the short, sexy outfit the woman on the dance floor had on.
It couldn't be her with her hair like that. She knows I like her to wear her hair up. The woman on the floor's hair was down. It looked unkempt, crazy, yet almost sultry all at the same time. It looked like she'd spent no time on it at all, yet I'd never seen it look better.
I knew her better than anyone, and knew that it couldn't be her.
The bartender saw me looking, and commented, "Some guys have all the luck, huh? I guess it's a good thing to see two people so in love. Something to drink?"
I ordered a cocktail I had no intention of drinking, and watched as they walked past me arm in arm, heading for the door. They didn't notice me, or anyone else at that bar for that matter.
And I just sat there and thought.
Thought about the kissing.
Thought about the hair.
Thought about the heels.
Thought about the dress.
Thought about the dancing.
And thought how much I hated that woman, but I loved the one at home.
I know the woman at home.
She doesn't dance.

Saw it and thought of the old Mark McGuinn song. Haven't heard it in a few years, but it's a good one.
