It was a balmy, soft, southern night. The living Earth pushed warm exhalations of her life breath over our backs and wrapped us in her sweet embrace. We walked across an undulating field of long grass and weeds, the wind combing through it like fingers in a lengthening mop of hair. The very ground from which all life sprung was waving, like a sheet held in the wind.
We angled across the vast plain, homing in on the single visible landmark, a Weeping Willow, standing alone in the distance. As we neared our destination, it seemed to dart away and back again, over and over, like it was taunting us, teasing us to cross that final endless expanse and be enveloped in it's warm embrace.
Just as it seemed we were too open, too exposed on this broad, flat plain, we suddenly arrived.
As we waded into the drooping branches, it seemed as though the wide open world from which we had come was made insignificant. We were now burrowing into privacy. A secret area hidden from the world that was ours and ours only, if only for a night.
This old tree embraced us, welcoming us into her secrets confines. She was reaching for the burning globe in the sky, she told us.
"The fiery orb that feeds us and keeps us warm."
She had spent years in that single pursuit, a seemingly endless string of days of pulling herself out of the ground. She told us that even now, in the early hours of the coming dawn, she was reaping the benefits of collecting the sunlight that rained from the sky.
"The spring always flows. Sometimes strong, sometimes ebbing, but the spring always flows."
Heeding her words, we began to seek the sky.
We clambered up her body, heading for the stars that beckoned us like lovers from above. At first, the going was easy. The branches were spaced widely, the limbs strong and thick.
Soon, her nature changed. She became less supportive of our endeavors, more involved with filling her own needs. The way became more restrictive. The branches sprouted thicker and more profusely than below, more buds bursting forth at more frequent intervals.
We emerged into the canopy.
Ah... Up here, the hunting was good, the rays of sunlight more abundant. Literally, manna fell from Heaven.
"Let us spread out our sheaves, our collectors. Let us blanket the area with leaves."
Eventually, we reached the point at which the sturdy trunk of the tree could no longer support our weight. All it's energy was invested in gathering. After all, this was the prime hunting ground, wasn't it? Bolster the supporting levels below. Nature dictated that more energy be expended here on collecting rather than fortification.
To be continued...

I liked this (sans picture, it ruined the mental image I had going). You present some great images in the writing. Sounds like a great mushroom trip; just communing with the universe. Keep it going, bro!

I liked this a lot. I think you did a really good job of capturing the mindset, at least the way my experiences have gone. My first time, I ended up watching my friends climb a tree just before sunrise; this story brought me back to the moment. I'd like to read part 2.

It's pretty much my favorite animal. It's like a lion and a tiger mixed... bred for its skills in magic.
