Danny's mother is a peculiar woman. She preaches non-violence, but loses her temper very easily. When she gets into a dispute this allows for this up and down swell of compassion and hatred to spew out simultaneously; the levels of which are in contrast to the amount of hostility coming from her nemesis. Bloody violent torrents of brutality ensue when it is in the case of Danny's father. In the case of Danny it is filled with very hateful words that can scar rather deep. It can sometimes be said that words may hurt more then sticks and stones.
"What is wrong with you Danny?" Danny's mother walked through the front door and announced her presence simply thus. "You are just like your father sometimes. Over reacting over superficial problems!"
"Do you even know what the kid said ma?" Danny turned away from his mother and got up to walk away, "What did you expect?"
"You look at me when I'm talking to you!"
"Why should I? You won't even take the chance to understand my side of the story."
"Your side? You think Mr. Sparks didn't explain 'your side'." Mother was cynical; if Mr. Sparks had told her what had happened then why the cynicism? "I understand being upset over the matter, but that doesn't give you the right to attack the kid. Anyways what do you expect me to do about this now? You know I don't get out of work until late and Tuesday we have an appointment with the doctor about Chris."
"I can find my own way home... I did today, didn't I?"
"How are you going to do that?"
"Didn't you hear me? I found my own way today on the Activity bus."
"I thought you told me you're not supposed to ride the activity bus if you've come from detention." Her skepticism held tight.
"They don't need to know that." Danny failed to comment on the fact the activity bus only runs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
"This doesn't defeat the fact you got in a fight. You know how I feel about that!"
"You don't get it mom. You don't get what it feels like."
"You think I don't understand how that feels? It is not just children who can be that cruel. You need to learn to deal with it. This kind of behavior is not tolerated in the real world."
"I'm tired of deal..."
"Don't cut me off. I wasn't done with what I had to say."
"What..." Danny could have sworn she completed her statement.
"It hurts me as well to hear someone has said that." She lowered her head a bit and shed a tear or two. Her words came out shaky as if she were about to burst into a torrent of tears, "but acting out the way you did is intolerable. What do you have to say for yourself?"
"I was saying; I am..."
"Don't cop that attitude with me young man!" Danny's mother snapped back for Danny's rude remark. The weeping had subsided and she was back to Ms. Bitch again.
"I am tired of people taunting me like they do. They aren't going to stop and no 'adult' can do anything about it. It is time I take this into my own hands!"
"You're just like your father sometimes. Always taking the easy way out; brute and bronze."
"Fighting isn't easy ma. Sometimes when it's the end of the line it's the only thing left to do."
"That's what your father would say. He's been getting drunk and filling your..." Danny cut his mother off quick as a flash yelling.
"Stop that! I can't fucking stand it when you always have to involve my dad at the most inopportune time! He has nothing to do with this."
"Yes he does, he is where you get all your hostility from. He is a drunken drug addict and it rubs off on you. Just look at your brother over there!" His mother barks back.
"Hey!" Charles cut in.
"Shut up!" Danny and his mother screamed back in unison. Charles turned back to the book in his hand and continued ease dropping.
"What, my father a drug addict. My father isn't a drug addict! He may drink on occasion, but that doesn't make him a bad man. Anyways, what the hell did you' do when you were with him?!" Danny hit his mother's nerve with that one.
"Oh... OH! You wanna pull that wild card? You think that is going to give you the upper hand don't you?" She started shaking her finger wildly at Danny. "What is this I fuck up once in my life and my own son holds it against me. I know, I'm fucking sorry I did drugs when I was pregnant with you." She instantly covered her mouth as to stop the words from coming out.
"Yeah ma, let's just fucking announce it for all the neighbors! Hey! Mr. Tuner I'm a crack baby!" Danny cupped his mouth like a megaphone and screamed at the dining room wall of their apartment.
"You stop that!" His mother came around the dining room table at him with fear in her eyes. 'Am I about to slap my own child?' her eyes spoke. Danny flinched and ducked down a little. The fear washed from her face and was once again angry, "What! I'm not your fucking father! I would never hit you... See I told you, your father has you brain washed."
"Quit it with my father nonsense!" Tears ran down Danny's eyes. He jumped from his chair and ran to his bedroom. "Leave me the fuck alone bitch!"
"I am your mother! Not your bitch!" The door slammed and she went quiet.
---------
Danny lay in bed heaving and going through photographs of his brother and him. Despite the fun they seemed to be having in every photo; Danny would have a giant fake toothy smile and Chris had a grumpy frown torn into his face. Danny envied Chris because he was able to show his true feelings so easily. Danny always feared a fight braking out if he were to reveal his true feelings; just like what occurred in the dining room.
"Why can't you be here bro.?" Danny rubbed the face of Chris in one of the photos, "You're the only one who understands what I mean. You shouldn't be there, you'd be better here at home."
There was a knock on his door.
"Danny, we have an appointment with Chris's doctor tomorrow. Afterward I am going to get you back to school and you are serving that long term detention."
Danny flipped the bird at the door and rolled over in bed.
