The World Press Photo foundation celebrates the 50th anniversary of its annual photographic competition this year. I stumbled across this piece of news during a B@W moment and looked into it. In doing so I found some truly magnificent work. I'd love to show you it all but as is always the case with something like this there is far to much for one post. I was tempted to put them into categories and do a series (and I may still do that) but I don't post that often and there is a fair chance that I wont get round to it. So instead I picked out some the pics that really captured the moment.
Each is Powerful and emotional in it's own way even without knowing the story behind it and they only become more so once you do. Take time to look at each one and really ask yourself what they make you think and how they make you feel you may learn a fair bit about yourself.
Anyway enough rambling and here you are.
Note: I deliberately decided not to post the more graphic and hard core pics I may include these in another post but I f I do suitable warnings as to content will be given

A great collection of pictures. As said below me, I also noticed the hands of the little girl in the first picture. Her head and eyes seems so vibrant and colorful while her hands are dull and waterlogged. It gives the impression that it is only a matter of time before her whole body ends up like her hands.
The afghan child also seemed interesting to me, but for reasons I don't consciously know.

I think what got me most are the hands of the girl in the first photo.. they're all puffy and losing thier shape, while her face is still perfect and beautiful.. It's haunting.

The pic of the girl and kid falling hits me the most, its real, its really happening and there is nothing you can do about it. You can't stop it, you can't help, its like watching the 9/11 footage and seeing those folks jumping out of the building.
Been a while since I felt a post.
Good work.
Dick.

Badass! you're going to ruin your reputation if you keep showing your softer side like that.
p.s your daughter cute and I'd do your wife.

some of my photos, just the ones in the beginning, she is a ham and the green walls with red hair made a great setting.

Mike, Thanks
Random, Like I say I do have a load more pic's I'll probably get around to posting them somtime. It's justa question of when.
inion_de_trua, I thought that too at first but they're not if you look closely you can see they're just dark brown and in shadow.
Scourge, Do it.
Badass, I agree it really does capture the moment well
ozzy, I have some on the tsunami. They come under the 'too graphic' category. I almost certainly will post them but in NSFW post.

I watched a doco on the Asian tsunami last night. There was some powerful fucking footage in that. Home vidoes of people being mowed down by the first wave, people clinging to debris and being washed away and even makeshift morgues full of dead kids.
It was the only time where I've ever just sat and watched a show for the entire duration, mouth wide open in shock, just thinking "Holy Fuck".

I looked into the first girl's eyes and all I could hear was 'ahahahhahhahahah' from that fucking movie 'The Grudge'
Good post I like it.
