electrictoothsyndrome: Yeah, I don't really pay too much attention to the style I'm painting in, though. I'll just be (for lack of a better word) inspired by something and try my best to get it on canvas. Some of my paintings seem a little looser, though. Like, the last painting of the stars and such, I was driving home one day and saw something I really liked, so I just took mental notes, and painted what I remembered.
My two all time favorite painters are Frederic Edwin Church, and Albert Bierstadt. If I could be as good as anyone, I'd want to be able to paint like they did.

By the way: I really liked your paintings. They have a very mystic, dreamy quality to them. My favorite is actually the tree. The vines at the base are nicely done.
Have you ever thought about venturing into surrealism? I think you'd do well in that style. Like Rene Magritte.

Loren1: I agree with you about the butterfly. The reason it's so perfect is because I didn't have any pictures of a real one, and I went with one that was in a frame. I couldn't just get a picture online, because I'm highly against using other peoples' work (including photographs) as reference.

JonnyX: As Loren1 said... I don't think he really sucks ass, but he has far more recognition than he deserves. Considering the highly skilled artists that are 10 times better than him that get no recognition.
NewGuy08: Don't worry, just check out the front page, and you'll see that no matter how good you are, you'll fit right in.
Envenom: I used to watch Bob Ross when I was a little kid. His style is more quick paced, though. His are done in an hour. My snow painting was done in 40+ hours.

The cottage winter scene is beautiful. You should do more like that.
One suggestion I got from a great teacher, and I think it will do you good too, was to change my perspectives a bit. I was stuck with the idea of keeping everything balanced/centered -- like your butterfly -- it's really nice, but if the perspective were a bit exaggerated, not so flat with the wings exactly the same on both sides, but a 3/4 view or more, it would be that much more interesting.

great post. Looks like you used watercolors but I can't be sure, I haven't painted in close to a year or so. Feces is also a good substitute for a dark brown if you ever run low on supplies.
