What will Canadians do if the hostages are executed? (924 hits)

http://www.cbc.ca/story/world/national/2005/12/07/Hostages-deadline-051207.html

Al-Jazeera is reporting that the captors of the two Canadians, one Briton and one American have extended the deadline until Saturday for the execution of their hostages. The captors want Iraqi prisoners in US and Iraqi detention centres released in exchange for the lives of the hostages.

The two Canadians are part of a Christian NGO called Christian Peacemaker Teams, dedicated to stopping violence by "getting in the way."

http://www.cpt.org/publications/history.php

Their Iraqi captors claim they are spies, as they claim are the American and Briton.

I hope that the captives will be freed soon. Paul Martin has declared the release of the captives "overwhelmingly the number one priority." I wonder how he plans to accomplish their release given the dissolution of parliament and the lack of a Canadian embassy in Iraq.

I'm wondering what the reaction of Canadians will be if the captives are executed. Will there be an outcry against the violence, swinging popular opinion in this country toward retaliation? Will this rouse Canadians toward anger about the insurgency/terrorists in Iraq, or will we remain removed from events there?

Most people I've spoken to about this issue knew little about it. Where knowledge did exist, anger at the threats of execution was non-existant. Is this complacency on the part of Canadians?

Personally, I hope that if the hostages are killed it will cause Canadians to become more involved in the discourse over Iraq. I'm not advocating sending our military (what military? Ha!) into Iraq. The issue of the safety of Iraqi citizens and foreign nationals in Iraq is largely (I feel) overlooked in this country, probably due in no small part to politicization of the issue by federal party leaders.

Perhaps this event, regardless of the outcome, will change the apathy that numbs the feeling of Canadians toward Iraqis.

They won't kill the Canadians...they seem to be making little effort to threaten them, while they handcuff and blindfold the American and the Brit.

I'm pretty sure if push comes to shove, we'll pull an Italy, and buy them out of trouble. Nothing that a bag of money (even Canadian money) can't make better.

As an american, I am really glad that the Canadians have let our country rot in Iraq. Maybe it will get bad enough where we can overpower the idiots and elect a liberal to straighten things out down here.

To all you Canucks - sorry your people got roped into this over there. You Brits too, you guys got suckered into this whole thing.

I just hope you guys realize that there are some intelligent people left in the ol' USA, and we tried to stop this whole Iraq mess, but the idiots have run wild and we're still trying to reign them in.

I think most people are going to have a hard time giving too much of a shit about people who were stupid enough to go over there and intentionally put themselves in harm's way.

Frankly, it seems to me like they (the people who have been captured) are getting exactly what they wanted.

With a few exceptions, there really is little excuse for any civilian from western nations to be in Iraq right now.
-------------

If you read the Christian Peacemaker Teams website, their mission in life is to "get in the way" of wars and other violent events.

Pretty fucked up.

My question isn't regarding whether the two should have been in Iraq, but what reaction will their possible executions produce.

No we will just not give a shit. As an american you're in no position to criticize. You guys have the fierciest firepower ever witnessed yet you keep getting your ass kicked by third world countries (viet nam, somalia, iraq) because your people cry over a few casualties. Not to mention that for the slightest terrorist speculation, you all go nuts and start buying duct tapes and hide in shelters.

The only reasons there are still terrorists it's because they know it works Americans can be terrorized...faggots.

But it's funny to see you say the same when you're among the first to defend soldiers who are just as dumb because they VOLUNTEERED!

(A) When have I said that soldiers shouldn't be killed in a war?

(B) There are many reasons to volunteer to be in the military, stepping into a war zone unarmed is rarely one of them. Once you've joined the military, for whatever reason, you go where they tell you to go and do what they tell you to do.

Plus, as a self-acclaimed Christian, you should be honoring these people who "fought" peacefully, more than soldiers anyway. But I know Christianity is all about saluting your flag and being intolerant of who thinks outside your little box.

- Without knowing the people, it is hard to know their real motives. If this was done on the basis of real faith, I DO respect them for it, somewhat. I'm not aware of the bible passage that says you have to be a complete idiot though.

- As for the last part of the above quote. You've got me. That's what I'm all about. U R teh WINN0RZ.

So yes, I am calling you a hypocrite, sir.

Also, 80% of americans (who supported this war at the beginning) are just as stupid. As more and more soldiers die they're now all asking "WHY?!?!" Well, because you invaded a country that didn't want you...maybe?

You guys are fucking idiots. Just as those two Canadians who I hope get erased out of the gene pool.

Yes and no. I would care if an American soldier was captured and threatened with execution, but I would understand that he/she was there on a mission. I'd hope that they got out alright, but I'd understand if they didn't. I'd worry about the soldier's family and friends back home.

But with these people . . . I can't do much but stand in awe of either their stupidity, naivette or insanity. With a soldier, you go because you are in the military (for whatever reason) and it is your job/duty. With these people, no one asked or told you to go, you go there without any weapons or presumably any INTENTION of protecting yourself from danger and . . . what? WHAT THE HELL DID THEY EXPECT?
===

Exactly.

It's not the responsability of all Canadians that a couple of Christian zealots were dumb enough to go walk around Iraq. It's their decisions, they weren't sent there.

I expect our government to do its best to recover them but I also expect them to be mindful of other Canadians who don't want to get close to that Iraq hornet nest that Americans shook. Neither militarily nor politically.

Hint to people who don't like to be beheaded: don't go to Iraq.
