In my fair city of New York City, our transit workers' union is threatening to strike beginning Friday night if their demands for a new contract are not met. While I understand the need for fair treatment of workers and the benefits of organized labor, there is still a line that may not be crossed. Just as police and health care providers can never be allowed to stop work, putting the lives of the populace in grave danger, transit workers can not be allowed to use a work stoppage to get their demands met. In a city like this, mass transit simply is a requirement for daily living. Without it, the streets become overcrowded, people are unable to get to work and access to basic health and human services such as hospitals becomes extremely restrictive. To combat this, I propose the following:
1. A large, indoor facility such as the Jacob Javitz Center or Madison Square garden must be vacated for an indefinite period of time. Inside, holding facilities will be constructed using the model of Guantanamo Bay in Cuba where enemy combatants are being held.
2. The names of every striking transit worker will be collected and a "lottery" will be conducted, so that 100 random workers will be selected.
3. Police will round up the spouses and children of each of the 100 workers picked in the lottery. If a worker does not have a spouse or child, they will be replaced by another worker randomly picked from the non-selected whose spouse and offspring will be collected.
4. All of the family members will be interned in the holding facility. Round-the-clock supervision will make sure that none of the interned will be harmed. This is not an imprisonment for punitive measures, mind you. These people are being held as a measure of protective custody from angered citizens who might resort to retaliation against transit workers due to the transit strike.
5. Once a resolution is found and the strike ends, all of the interned will be released.
I think this is a very fair plan.

You are obviously a master at collective bargaining agreements.
I saw Al Sharpton and Rev. Jesse Jackson yesterday during the TWU rally in front of Grand Central. Must say, those guys sure do know how to rile up a bunch of idiots. Seriously, all JJ did was say "More Money" and the crowd repeated, "More Money." He said "More Benefits," the repeated "More benefits." "More for our family," "More for our family."
I lost respect for him yesterday...if I had any to begin with. He did nothing but spout out sweet little nothings into the crowds ears and they ate it up like the sheep they are.
Then there was Al Sharpton.........my eardrums will be suing him.
There won't be a strike. The MTA would lose a reported $600 MM on the first day. Kalikow can't afford that. He'll settle at the 11th hour.
