Why is it that every time a band makes it big they have to sell out? I'm in a garage band, and because we arent motivited by fame or money, just making cool music, the music doesn't suffer for it. I guess before mtv and vh1 and everything, bands didnt have to sell out because there wasn't much fame or money to gain from selling out, so they may as well stick to what they started as. I think it is also strange that bands never stay at the same level they either sell out like good charlotte once they get a taste of fame or they just go ahead like S P or green day and improve the quality of the music, although they lose some fans who liked the old style and probably gain other fans who appreciate music at a higher standard. I mean relatively high standard, whenever you state your favorite bands someone will always be there to criticize "hey that band is just a sellout band", well guess what? EVERY BAND IS A SELLOUT BAND you never would of heard of them if they didnt sell out to a corporate music label so even though you may thinking to whatever it is you think you are listening to is better than my bands I like, your bands are just as much sellouts.
I think before selling out that was the only time good music was made, but you have still got to listen to something to something modern, and the older bands did have an advantage, none of the riffs were taken when they were starting. ANYONE could invent the riff for creams "layla" or "sunshine of your love", they were just waiting to be found and had they not found them the next band would of. Anyway, you say green day is shit but all music is shit for the past 30 years. no real bands have emerged since then, but green day have catchy songs, are good performers are straight-edge and always produce the same decent quality of music.

How does this perspective continue to exist? Selling out has nothing to do with major label activity, minor label activity, contract, or anything else. Selling out means betraying yourself- whether that means changing your music to "fit in", allowing your label to decide your music for you instead of maintaining creative rights, or doing things you swore you would never do.

on some level every band is a sell out.
on another level... stop listening to the radio and go out and find music that is on some no name label. find something that you like and quit bitching.

And besideds, the rebels can produce full studio quality product in their apartments now with enough time, motivation, and a ripped computer program. If the rebels have any trouble from the corporates, it's that they can't get the big-wigs to pay the back rent that they lost while recording their masterpiece.

Oh jesus, why does everybody say that the current decade sucks, regardless of what the current decade is? And the 80's didn't suck, either. If anything, I'd say that the 90's was the biggest hole in music since the 40's. What have you got: Nirvana, .........
One band does not define a generation, the generation slumps into its herd mentality and picks a spokesperson thereby making that band the diamond in the shit heep. The generation defines the band. Suffocation style. Everything is to individual taste, but the 80's held a hell of a lot more music that I can listen to and actually feel good, as opposed to wanting to blow my fucking head off.

Selling out means betraying yourself- whether that means changing your music to "fit in", allowing your label to decide your music for you instead of maintaining creative rights, or doing things you swore you would never do. Nickelback are sellouts, because they swore to never do balladsy music, and now are the revival of dumb redneck '80's hair music. Only worse.
Green Day suck and are sell outs because they jumped on the anti-Bush bandwagon a bit late, and are now taking advantage of that ideology to make more money. Trying to relate to the kids by acting rebellious, all the while parading a viewpoint that identically reflects the majority of Americans' thoughts? How ironic, Green Day.
Music rises and falls. The '50's had garbage music; the '60's and '70's had some very good quality work. Once again, the '80's sucked, the '90's produced some great innovation. We are back in another slump where the corporate bastards have more say than the rebels, and we are still a few years away from the tide turning on that one. Music will get better again, and everyone will be amazed by how great music can really be once more. Until then, you're stuck with Chris Cornell, a once bad ass motherfucker, singing 59 different lines about how it doesn't remind me of anything.
Form your paragraphs more gooder, clownshoes supreme.

-------
Actually, there is an abundance of really great music out there that is NOT produced by giant corporate labels- unless you consider any band ever signed by anyone label to fit that bill. These are the kind of bands that play in tiny little clubs, converted churches, and bars in Philly instead of ampitheaters and stadiums- those whose successes are not judged on the revenue they generate, but instead on their talent and the joy their music bring to others.
If you think the only way to 'hear about bands' is to wait until, by your definition, they 'sell out', than YOU are part of the problem. Peer-to-peer, online zines, and word of mouth have introduced me to bands that have never been promoted by MTV or any popular radio station.
The arrogant implication that anyone who reads this post is presumably a brainwashed pop music sheep is pretty presumptuous. You aren't the only musician or fan who appreciates music that hasn't cracked the top 40.

I've been in and out of bands for the last 19 years and let me tell you, if a promoter comes knocking on your (garage) door, contract in hand, are you going to tell him, "Piss off pal. I'm strictly underground. I don't need your millions and fame. I'd lose all my fans at the bar we play at."? I don't think so. Not every musician is out there looking for fame and fortune (I sure as hell aren't) but anyone that says they'd turn down the opportunity is LYING or still living in their parents' basement at age 35.

fuck you cocksmoker. if i was making good music that everyone wanted to listen to, then damn right i would sign to a label and make money off it. Why should anyone give their art away for free? also if your signed, more chance more people would listen to it as it would be marketed around the country. Wouldnt you like more people to listen to you music?

Interviewer: Why did yu get into Rock and Roll in the firstplace?"
Steven Tyler: "Snatch, natch."
You play guitar in a garage band mostly for the music but partly for the potential pussay (and by 'pussay' I mean whatever parts of some other person you enjoy rubbing your naughty bits against, might be anything). When you start actually playing out there's more pussay to be had. Your shows have sets and you play a certain group of songs. Eventually, after a few years, you're playing the same songs every night and there's more pusay thatn you can safely deal with so you also start thnking about monay too. But you sold out right when you rubbed against that first anonymous pussay in the dressing room after the show at that bar, so many years ago. Right then, it was no longer about music.
You're the same as everyone else. Smile and practice a lot. See the ocean of monay and pussay before you: dive in.

If you would ever have someone pay to see your show, or buy one of your cds, then congrats...you're a sellout. People need to make a living; if you had the chance to do music for a living (get paid for it, I mean) would you?

Contradicting arguments...
Eh, it's not a real post anyways, but just remember: it costs money to make music.
Guitars, amps, strings, cords, mics, speakers, drums (cymbals, toms, snare, bass), drum sticks, processors, keyboards, etc. are not free.
Not everyone has mommy and daddy's garage to practice in. Not everyone wants to keep working for 9-10 hours a day in an office and then use whatever leftover energy they have left to get a few hours of practice in.
You suck.

actually green day are considered "sell outs" by most close minded cunts like yourself.
you and your shitty band are "only in it for the music" until a record company dangles a nice check in front of your ugly little face.
"before vh1 and mtv"
mtv started in like 1981 and you think there wasn't fortune and fame to "sell out" for before then?
the reason most "sell out" is so they can get paid to do what they love to do and reach more people.
would you rather all the greats just did it for the music and worked at some factory while they kept the music to themselves in some garage just to not sell out? idiot.
