Hoarding gasoline and supplies, and sitting on the porch with weapons and lemonade used to sound like redneck backwards thinking to me, until Katrina hit. This was the first hurricane season we did more than a couple day's prep for a storm.
I do not even live in New Orleans or Gulfport. I live in a peaceful, boring, Mississippi certified retirement community which rarely *had* any crime or trouble. It's even a dry county. But 2 days after the storm, in the middle of the night, my husband, dad, and uncle had to go down the road with guns and dogs. Someone had just finished breaking into my 90 year old grandmother's house, and luckily she wasn't there. Before that they had broken into my other uncle's store up the road, and when they saw there wasn't anything to be had but some cigarettes, they vandalized what they could. Similar shit was happening all over town.
HELLO! There was no 911, so you had to take care of your own household. Even if there had been a 911, emergency vehicles were not able to access most areas for another 2 days. What would ya say? "Oh, please mister robber and possible rapist with a gun, go away! Please stay away from my wife and daughters and everything I ever worked for! We are living in a lovely civilized society here, don't you know?" Trush me: Those intent on evil will find a way to get into places where law and order cannot follow.
People will indeed turn into dogs when their basic needs aren't being met. They will come from wherever they are, and they will find a place where folks are mostly happy and prosperous, like this town, and they will take with no regard for anyone, because they resent prosperity and love. Is it any wonder that, since the hurricane, we have had a sharp rise in crime here, where there once was almost none? That's all about people moving from New Orleans to here and doing what they did everyday there! I happen to know that if you remove law enforcement, there will be chaos. When our disaster hit, all forms of law and order were effectively removed for several days. Does anyone think that the only place that would happen is here in the backwards South?
I agree with what Filthy Assistant said about people banding together to help each other, and trying to have a little faith in humanity. Because we were more prepared than most, (not richer, just more prepared) we were able to help our neighbors and share our food and gasoline with those who had failed to prepare. We have our own free-flowing well, so we always had clean water, as opposed to some of our neighbors. But you must have the means to protect these resources, because it only takes one person with a gun to mortally dispatch and then rob a large household of people.
I get frustrated when I hear people talk about the "looting" situation as if it were only a few random shooting or robbery incidents that happened only in New Orleans, and only with black evacuees. That's wrong. We had lots of trouble here after the storm, further up in the surrounding towns. It's just that all the rest of the world heard about was N.O., and that's still all you f'ing hear about. (Squeaky fucking wheel gets the grease, eh? They never cease their whining, and most of them have yet to lift a finger to rebuild, as they are hoping someone does it for them.)
Call me a backwards redneck, but I'm glad we have guns and dogs and are able to hunt and fish, and have a garden. Sorry for the rant. But I want people to know that it can happen in any town, any at all. We don't have a panic mentality around here. Life wouldn't be worth living if that was the case. But preparation is nothing to take lightly, and your money would never save you in a real disaster. Only what you already had in your possession, and could effectively protect from thieves will help you.

You are no fun when you are being reasonable.
You may hate the leadership, but sometimes it is hard to believe you get the big picture. Take the spying for instance. Look at my response here http://www.ubersite.com/m/81091 , I can't blame you for flipping out. The NYT did since bush was involved, but in 1980 it was fine, when Clinton was in office it was fine. You may have problems with this policy, but it is a cop out to pin all your hatred on Bush (I am not saying he is a great leader).
Anyone can leave the country. There are plenty of opportunities if you really want it, without the military. If you are willing to sacrifice some financial security you could be on a plane in a month.
Everbody knows gas guzzling cars are a waste. I drive a CRV, not the best, but for my former job I needed an all, or at least four wheel drive vehicle, and it was the most efficient. I support the democrats when it comes to alternative energy, and if that was their top priority, they would pprobably get my vote more often. The problem is they make their top priority the opposite of what the Republicans top priority is. The decisive issues the democrats choose normally offend me or I am indifferent to, like affirmative action.
You jumped to the conclusion that I was in the military, you assume I am a diehard republican. I don't see things in black and white. But I do love my country, I enjoy arguing with people who protest against it, and try and change it. But when people say they are going to leave it my response is reduced to when? If it was an off the cuff remark made in a fit of anger, fine but if you really wanted to there is no reason you are still here.

I just noticed it was still going on from last night. I don't know what to think about it, precisely. I just hope you all eventually agree to disagree. It is obviously a conflict arising from fundamentals of personality, not opinions. It looks odd to the casual observer, because you don't seem to have a genuine dislike for each other, regardless of words. You may even rather like each other if you met in person- you may even be quite a bit alike, which is often the cause of a falling out. It's kinda like Grumpy Old Men, but on a more philosophical note. I may have to give you both a sound beating. Or something. Hehe.

you remind me of my dad. i've forbidden him to watch the news or the history channel while i'm around because he has the habit of screaming things like "fuck you lieberman" at cnn at 7:30 in the morning. he's a smart guy, he just goes off on things he can't control no matter how many times he goes to the polls. i keep wondering when he's going to give himself a stroke or heart attack.
the real difference between republicans and democrats is republicans have the balls to back up their own policies. no matter who's in office, whoever pays the most gets the most help. always. in the end, it's a lot of rich people in charge of a lot of poor people. left or right doesn't matter. right up the middle of the road or in the backwoods not giving a shit who did what where in the oval office. it may be a sad state of affairs, but you need to calm down. fervor without a good outlet will just give you high blood pressure and migraines. maybe sleep issues, gas, i dunno, something. it's not good for you. stress over shit you really have no say in or power over will just kill you.
but then again, you might be looking for that anyway. calm thyself.

The only reason I haven't is because I cannot just up and leave. I don't have a college degree. I frittered a lot of my life away so far for various reasons I don't care to explain to you, and that are, frankly, none of your goddamn business. Most countries will not allow you to just move there withou being a skilled worker. Unfortunately, my skills aren't backed up by a piece of paper.
I don't hate my country. I grieve for it.
Any time I try to say something, I catch flak for it, so yea...it gets old even trying. The tendency is to just say "fuck it" and leave, which is what I'll probably end up doing, but like I said before, I can't do that right this moment.
This isn't a matter of conviction. I have PLENTY of that. It's a matter of simply not having the proper education to do much about it right now but 'rail against the system'.
As for the issues of the comforts of modern society. I never said they weren't nice. I never said they didn't make life easier (which is debatable). I said they come at a price. I said that price is growing higher and higher every day. Soldiers across the ocean are paying the price of our wastefulness with their lives! Everytime an American consumer purchases that Chevy Silverado Half-Ton or Suburban, they're just increasing the overall demand we have for oil as a commodity, thus ensuring we do either one of two things: try to secure our interests in the market overseas with the use of force or diplomacy (in this case force), or we open up National Parks for drilling in this country, further devastating the beauty of our natural environment.
I never said modern conveniences didn't have their advantages. I said we should think about how we use them and conserve them whenever we can and not just be completely irresponsible LIKE WE'VE ALWAYS BEEN IN AMERICA. When a country has 5% of the world's population and puts out 20% of its carbon emission...we've got a major fucking problem. We're being greedy at that point.
I'm not saying don't eat, and I'm not saying stop driving altogether. What I am saying is that if there are alternatives, they should be used. If you live alone, buy a smaller car instead of lugging around 1500 extra pounds everywhere you go by driving an SUV with 8 cylinders.
Why is that so difficult to understand? I don't get your argument.

I'm with you on that. Sometimes by focusing too hard on the battle, you lose the war.
I think there are some VERY important issues we need to address in this country that are IMMINENT. Alternative energy sources should be priority #1. We CANNOT continue, as the human race, to burn fossil fuels. It will destroy us. I don't say that in a screaming, angry way. I say that in the humblest, most sincere way I know how. That should be obvious to EVERYONE, whether you're Republican or Democrat...American or Swahili... We're all in this together as far as that's concerned.
The problems come whenever we start to choose sides on issues. We associate the leftists with allowing Eminent Domain. We also associate them with environmental issues. Therefore the tendency is to disregard what they have to say on the environmental issues because a few of the dullest tacks allowed eminent domain to pass the supreme court. This is just an example.
Some Republican, on the other hand, might have the right idea about affirmative action, gun control, and the death penalty, but they managed to screw the pooch on issues of the environment and national security as far as I'm concerned. They get their kickbacks from the rich guys with all the interests in oil, so they're not going to give a fuck about what they do to our world.
The Democrats take a lot of issues too far at the expense of their overall mission. They manage to turn enough people against them because they support a lot of questionable things themselves, but does that mean that we should naturally defect to listening to everything the Republicans say as a result?
No. Absolutely not!
Every issue needs to be approached without concern for partisanship. That is the death of thinking.
I don't think you've really taken the time to sort through enough of what I've written to get a holistic view on where I stand and, more importantly, who I am. Sometimes I say things completely in jest and no one on this website, except for a select few, even get that I'm joking. Other times I'm completely serious and I'm taken with a "haha funny" attitude.
That's one of the facts I've accepted. I just don't come across well in print. Laziness prevents me from taking the time to type out all the intricasies of every issue that's on my mind.
Words cannot always encapsulate what we want to say in a neat little package unless it's a "FUCK YOU, DIE!"

My parents went apeshit over the whole Y2K thing, and as a result, we had enough canned food to last for about 3 years. So I know if anything ever happens, all I gotta do is make it to my parents' house.

Yeah, yeah. Somebody has to temper his enthusiasm for vigilantism though, because he would quite happily make himself a rambo headband, tool up and sit on the porch taking pot shots at neighbourhood cats, all the while trying to sell it to himself as survival of the fittest. I fully believe in being prepared and, if I lived in america, that would include owning a gun (as much as I'd bitch and moan about it). But while the world hasn't yet gone to hell, I have the luxury of waxing philosophical about what should happen as opposed to what will happen.
Do you not think that, with the luxury of time that we currently have, our efforts would be best spent trying to rectify the problems in a society where it is seen as acceptable to descend into Lord of the Flies style madness at the slightest sign of trouble? When somebody tries to start up a refrain of 'kill or be killed' already it's fixing that idea in people's minds making that 'dog eat dog' insanity all the more likely to occur. By all means, take sensible steps to prepare yourself for all eventualities but when you're shouting about ethics going out the window at the first sign of trouble you are essentially lighting a fuse that you're not going to be able to put out later.
It's community that saves lives and you don't encourage a sense of community by suggesting that "you know what? If it all goes bad, fuck you - I'm eating the last ham sandwich"

I've got a shit ton of stores stashed away, cause quakes always take out the power. I'm in San Francisco, on a small patch of solid rock. No worries about the earth moving, but this town will shut down for a few weeks or more if there is another big one.
Some of the Katrina 'victims' from NO are in California. Some municipalities are paying off their mortgages, picking up all kinds of expenses, and these fuckers still haven't found jobs. Incredible.
