I've been watching a lot of news lately. Normally, I can't stand watching the news because it's disheartening to hear about all the death, destruction, and mayhem. In the holiday spirit, a lot of stations tone down their disaster stories and focus on all the good stuff that happens—charity drives, random good deeds, stuff like that.

There was one story that caught my attention a few days ago and I've been thinking about this woman a lot in the past few days.

Her story started when a man abducted her and her two-year-old son in the parking lot of her local Wal-Mart. The man had killed his drug dealer over a deal, and then decided to drive to Wal-mart. It blows my mind how he went from killing one man to abduct a woman and her son.

Over the next 48 hours at a local Plymouth motel, the man raped the kidnapped woman at knifepoint while her two-year-old watched the assault. He threatened to kill both of them if the woman didn't follow his instructions and if the child didn't stop crying, and soon he decided that he wanted some liquor.

They drove to the store, where immediately after pulling into the parking lot, he hit another car. The damage was minimal, but the clerk on duty had seen the incident and had decided not to serve him alcohol. He got angry, and persisted several times before leaving.

He came back, woman and child in tow, and started browsing the aisles. The clerk was notified that something was wrong when the woman mouthed, "Help me" and then "Pilgrim Sands" and wouldn't make eye contact with the clerk.

Luckily, the clerk took notice and had the other person working with her copy down the license plate number as the car drove away. The police were contacted, and they arrived at the motel at the same time the stolen car pulled in. The man was arrested, and the woman and her toddler were taken to Jordan Hospital for treatment and counseling.

Even though this story makes my blood boil and I can honestly say that I hate the scumbag that did this to them, I'm happy that they survived the ordeal. This, by all rights, should have ended in a tragedy, but thanks to the woman's bravery at the liquor store, and the clerk's sense to call the police, they are alive.

It's stories like this that touch me the deepest. It's stories like this that remind me that I appreciate my family. It makes me wonder 'what if?' What if my little sister was abducted and I never saw her again? What if my Dad was in the wrong place at the wrong time and got caught in crossfire and was killed? What if my Mom was on her way home from work and a drunk driver hit and killed her? It's terrifying to think of ANY of those scenarios. It scares me that people like this are still out there.

I hope that man gets the absolute maximum penalty for his crimes and I hope he rots in prison for the rest of his sad life.

I gave everyone in my family a hug tonight. That might sound silly and corny, but I recommend it, not because it's the holiday season, but because there might be people in your life that you care for that don't know it or have forgotten it during this season of hustle and bustle.

Moral of the story: Don't be stupid enough to get abducted by crazy drug addicts.

Framingham is where the local Walmart was and where the man was from, by the way.
