I heartily suggest you read the earlier chapters if something does not make sense.

It is 8pm when I leave my little apartment. The lift is so slow that I do not wait for it and instead I trudge down the six flights of stairs, using my little finger to remove the gunk from the corners of my eyes. I walk up the hill to Kings Cross and it is as if I am a machine. The steep ascent usually leaves my legs feeling like lead piping but today I feel only tiredness. Similarly the pain and angst about my health is gone; replaced by a comforting fatigue. At some point I realise I am hungry for a home cooked meal and I decide to call my mother and invite myself to dinner. It has been a week since I saw her last and I miss the attention she provides. She does not answer her phone.
As I approach the garish lights of The Cross I begin to perk up. The night is only just beginning and the streets are full. The hawkers are trying to entice their first customers into the strip shows and the street walkers wait patiently for their first trick. The pubs are full of backpackers and clubbers and the other dealers sit where they always sit; on a corner or bench, outside a pizza place or kebab shop. They will wait hours for a sale while I have people call me. They will go home almost empty handed when my pockets are full of twenty and fifty dollar bills; each proof of the inability of wealthy parents to sustain their luxurious lives without forgetting their kids; and each evidence of their children's desire to find something worth bothering about in an all-too-easy lifestyle.
The least attractive element of my job is picking up from Nathan and I am annoyed that I have to return there so soon. I arrive at the apartment block and buzz Nathan to let me. I need not have bothered though, because I push the door and it is open, so I walk in and climb the stairs. In his room, Nathan is lying on his bed while a girl solemnly uses her learner's driver's licence to line up cocaine on a grimy shaving mirror. I look past her and talk to Nathan. He tells me he has blue spades and nothing else and to give the money to Michelle. I put the cash on the table in front of the girl but she does not respond. I wait as she lowers her face to the mirror and inhales violently. She blinks a few times then rubs her nose. Then she smiles.
"I'm in a rush Nathan," I say and he raises his head off the pillow and tells Michelle to make the deal. Michelle reaches under the bed and pulls out an airtight plastic bag. She opens it and carefully extracts nine perfect round tablets; she puts one in her mouth and the rest on the table. I take the bag and leave without counting the pills. I wonder if it is a bad thing that I trust a drug dealer.

Alyssa is becoming really tight with Marcus, and that's a good thing because it means he won't mind that she spends so much time with his best mate. In fact, Marcus often suggests that Jake invites her when they go out, and when they are out, Alyssa and Marcus laugh together about Jakes little flaws and foibles. It is all very good natured.
After the day at Circular Quay, Marcus and Alyssa start to call each other up, just to chat. Alyssa never tells Jake she is calling Marcus and she assumes Marcus doesn't either. It's not like Jake would mind, though, because he is mostly what they talk about, and what they say is mostly nice. Alyssa figures that as long as Jake is happy then she's doing the right thing.
It seems like just yesterday but Alyssa has been going out with Jake for almost six months now. On Saturday, their six month "anniversary," Alyssa and Jake are going to stay and the Hyatt hotel together and drink champagne. Best of all, they figure that not only will they have sex, but also they'll be able to sleep together, which is good, because they've wanted to for a long time. Jake doesn't know it but Alyssa has planned a really cool present. She hopes he likes it because she made it herself. She is nervous about the whole thing but she can't wait to give Jake his present and she can't wait to fall asleep in his arms but most of all, she can't wait to wake up in them.
