"I've played this game before." Her voice falters, as though she knows she's speaking in clichés and doesn't know whether to continue.
"If you're going to call it a game," he begins, his voice cracking, "then we might as well not bother. I'd really rather not bother. Popular mechanics, you know?"
They sit primly with their backs pressed straight against the couch and their knees barely touching. He shifts his weight and she jumps, moving a few inches away from him and wrapping her arms around a stocky blue-green pillow.
"Sometimes I'm exhausted," she says.
He doesn't know what to say. If he says the wrong thing, he'll lose her to god knows what. If he says the right thing, then everything he wants to happen will happen. He'll have her back, but he'll wonder what the terms really were. What's the value in convincing somebody to be with you? How fucking worthless.
He doesn't have to speak. She breaks the silence.
"The thing is- I don't really know how to be with you. I think it's more a matter of actually being you. You're exactly what I'd like to be. Your beliefs, your poise, your standards, your rationale."
His eyes gloss over in semi-climatic, overly cliché, yet genuine tears.
She continues. "You told me once, that you wanted to be the perfect human being. Or to be the most perfect human being you could be. I've never aspired to that, but I've felt like I should. All I really ever wanted to do was exist. At some point, with you I quit doing that and I began to overanalyze every movement, every breath to the point where the movements and the breathes were not actually mine. I can't do it anymore."
He leans forward, resting one hand on his boney knee and pushing his hair back with the palm of his hand. His posture says everything. His slouching shoulders, curling arms, and feeble neck scream "I am defeated!"
"Why did you call me to come over?" he finally asks her.
Her expression is clear. She isn't remorseful or unsure about what she is about to say. She glows ultraviolet, from her eyes, down the crest of her cheeks and into the pits of what might be her heart.
"See," she says, and leans towards him, her pupils dilating as though she had cat eyes. He expects her to swish her tail and purr.
"I want your skin. Why don't you just hand it over and I'll leave you here, a bloody corpse."
He does the only thing that he can do. He unzips the suit and hands her his flesh.
"Hand it over," she says pointing at his heart. "You won't be needing that."
