I get to the Hampton twenty minutes early so I buy a Heineken at the bar and sit down to wait. I feel bored and lonely and conflicted and confused and with all the shit about STD's I really need to relax. I decide to call my friend Marcus, although I don't know if I can call him a friend. We used to be friends but we have drifted apart and now we have some sort of awkward understanding; friendliness without friendship, I guess. Marcus is the man who first offered me a joint and although he doesn't smoke much I have never known him to turn me down. I am therefore not surprised when he assures me he will be over in a few hours to "smoke and drink together, like old times."
Twenty minutes disappear in no time at all. I meet Illona's friend outside and he holds out his hand for mine. "I'm Ray," he says. I nod politely.
"Jake," I reply.
Ray buys two pills and I make a tidy profit. He asks if he can call me again and I tell him yes. He asks if the pills are good quality and I tell him yes, again. A little white lie never hurt anyone.
Ray seems rich and confident but not very honest. I instinctively do not trust him. He is wearing Calvin Klein and Bally with Hugo Boss shoes and when he talks to me he talks slowly. He is over-friendly and it makes me think he is scared of me, which is funny, because I'm sure I recognise him from parties last year. I do not blame him for not knowing me. I was a different person then.
I am walking down Victoria Street, past the trendy bars and restaurants when I see a familiar face.
"Amy?" The girl has walked past me already so she looks back over her shoulder.
"Jake!" She says, smiling. She leaves her friends for a moment and gives me a hug. "What are you doing here?"
"I just had a drink with a friend," I lie. She tells me that they are going to a trendy bar nearby and that I am welcome to come. Without thinking I say, no, I can't, I'm sorry but I have to meet a friend. Instead she gives me her number. She puts her hand on my wrist and gives it a squeeze;
"Call me." She doesn't say it but I understand it from her smile.
Twenty steps later I look at my wristwatch and realise I have screwed up. I'm not meeting Marcus for hours and I just turned down this gorgeous girl so I could get home early and wait. I turn around and go after them. The bar they are going to is less than a minute away. I show the bouncer at the door my drivers licence and I enter the bar without a problem. I stand near the doorway and at first I cannot see Amy or her friends. Eventually they catch my eye. They are sitting in a corner booth with a pair of boys who look about my age. Amy is on the edge and seems disinterested; she is looking around the bar, not listening to the boys talk. Her two friends, however are staring intently at one of the boys. He takes something out of his pocket and I recognize it as the packet I just sold him. I turn away from Ray and Amy and their friends and I walk out the door, back to my apartment, my marijuana and my pseudo friend. The moon is a mere sliver of silver in the sky.

Ray hates buying his drugs because he feels sick even looking at drug-dealing scum. It's worth it, though, because now he and his mate can take a pill each or share a pill and get some chicks high too. Pills are better than weed because the girls never smoke weed properly so they never loosen up but when the trip kicks in, he knows that they are putty in his hands. Ray loves it when a girl has never had a pill before, because in that case he knows they will have a great time and they will be all over him and he will love it because he will be tripping too.
On that night he buys his pills and hurries back onto the main street, relieved. The alley beside the Hampton is especially dark tonight because the moon is new and only a fingernail clipping can be seen in the sky. He walks quickly to the Peppermint Lounge to meet Ben and is glad to see that his ex, Amy, and her friends have just arrived.
He greets them each individually and Amy's friends both give him a kiss on the cheek. Amy just smiles at him, without saying anything. Ray takes it as a compliment that she obviously still isn't over him, and is obviously still upset that she couldn't keep him interested. He ushers them inside, where Ben has already found them a table.

That first part reminded me of the Family Guy episode where Peter narrates his own life.
Other than that, it was pretty classy.
