In response to this post http://www.ubersite.com/m/20173
and every time I have ever heard an American go on about "but its my choice to -smoke -bear arms -not wear a seatbelt/helmet etc."
I honestly think that the above post illustrates what is wrong with the attitude of the majority of Americans (that I have met anyway)...
Florida repealed their law requiring motorbike riders to wear helmets, the result:
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, found that in the three years following Florida's repeal of its mandatory helmet law in 2000, 933 motorcyclists were killed, an 81 percent increase from the 515 bikers killed from 1997 to 1999.
The cost of hospital care for motorcycle injuries grew from $21 million to $44 million in the 30 months after the law changed; the figures were adjusted for inflation.
Who is the governer in Florida by the way? The presidents brother? Oh, gee. I wish I had the right to push my states finances into the red by making idiotic choices.
Believe it or not but if your 'choice' could result in the doubling of your states expenditure on health care then it is not your choice - it is your states/communities choice too because they will bear the brunt of your choice as well.
What about the cost of all the rehabilitation for people involved in accidents, who aren't wearing seatbelts/helmets? Who bears this cost? Don't people think about this before deciding 'it is their right to drive/ride without a seatbelt/helmet' - Decisions like this impact everyone so unless you have the funds to pay for any and all treatment what gives you the right to decide to drive/ride without a seatbelt/helmet??
So lets say (hypothetically) you ride your bike without a helmet and crash and instead of a minor injury you have brain damage and can't work (unless you are the President of the USA or possibly a marketing executive), you end up in a home/rehab clinic and your wife claims welfare and your kids turn into shitheads because you aren't around to beat them up enough and then they breed more fucking halfwits who rely on welfare etc. LOOK AT THE FLOW ON EFFECT FROM YOUR ACTIONS!
Is it just me or does the Florida example just scream STUPIDITY?
I have had a discussion with a friend who explained that not all Americans are so arrogant etc. Apparently everyone in New York and California are normal and progressive it just the bible belt all the states in the south and Texans that ruin America...
Is this true?
If I was a bad-ass American, this is the bike I would ride around in with no helmet and a fucking malboro sticking outta my mouth (but I would have top health cover so if I did a fully mad stack into a train I wouldn't burden taxpayers)

Florida has a tourist economy. That's why the bars are open until 3, the liquor stores are open on Sunday, and you cannot throw a rock without hitting an Indian reservation with a casino and cheap smokes. You can hunt, fish, swim, bask, and even rent a harley if you want to. One thing tourists like to do is not be told how to behave. One thing everyone likes is to not be told how to behave. So, there's no helmet law in Florida anymore.
Florida does not have a State income tax for residents. The cost borne by the State for all these broke-headed motorcyclists is in fact paid by the tourists and the businesses they patronize.
I live in Florida. In my line of work I see more than a few motorcycle crashes. It's true; helmets make a difference. If you are wearing one when you hit the pavement (and if you ride, statistically speaking you will hit the pavement eventually), you are less likely to suffer death or serious head injury. I ride old Kawasakis and I wear a helmet. I wear heavy pants (Carhartts, for you Americans), gloves, and a leather or heavy denim jacket, even when it's 95F/100%RH outside. My choice, not yours, because I don't like to be told how to behave.
Also, if you're going to ride that shiny chromy bike for more than about 20 miles, you'll need a back brace. West Coast Choppers are supermodel turds. Ratbikes Rule. http://www.ratpackcycles.com

Dude, show me these fuckin' liquor stores. The places in Orange, Seminole, and Osceola Counties close at 10 pm every night except Saturday, which is the night they close at 11. And where do the main tourist locations lie? In Orange and Osceola counties, and on the edge of Seminole county.

Individual Rights/Communal Well-Being.
The Americans have never really understood the importance of the latter.
------
So far as seatbelt and helmet laws are concerned, how does one's decision to refrain from wearing either one affect communal well-being.
If one decides not to wear a safety belt or motorcycle helmet and dies as a result of that decision, that is the fault of said person; Natural selection at it's finest.

I don't smoke, don't plan on ever getting near a motorcycle. I don't get in the way of those that do do those things. Except for bikers on the highway smoking cigarettes. I ram them with my car.

I find it kind of funny that during the last 12 hours as all you American geniuses have been misunderstanding my post on here, your dollar has had the biggest 2 day drop against the Euro in the last 5 years...
So while I imagine all you guys were sitting around drinking warm beer and yelling at people for telling you what to do I made a 117.4% 2 day return off of the back of your 'superior' economy!
Anyway the point of my post is this:
ah fuck it I just executed my best forex trade in a year, so I'm taking the rest of the month off.
FUCK YOU

I lived in Florida for a while, and you may not be aware of it, but it is inhabited by a bunch of niggers and refugee Cubans. Really, who the hell cares? Why do you care? You seem to be one of those high class European types who only pays his servants a modest sum but makes up the difference with sexual favors.

Even though it is stupid to ride without a helmit, I am against a law that requires it. There are too many laws as it is.
Why not reduce the speed limit to 40 mph (67 kph)? I am sure that would keep a lot of people out of the hospital.
Why not place everyone in the whole country under house arrest? We would all be much safer that way.
Gee, those ideas would hurt the economy. But, what price do you place on a human life?
Duh

Actually most helmet laws are repealed because of a lack of organ donors. There are alot of people/organizations who lobby for this because it keeps them in buisness. The bikers don't want to wear helmets and it creates a fresh pool of organs to keep the sergeons in buisness. So everyone wins. Sad as it may be.

No we're not. I'm a cyclist and I wear a helmet..always. I think it is a law in NJ for motorcyclists to wear a helmet, at least on the highways. And I agree that it does affect more than just the person driving if they get into an accident. Insurance rates go up, etc, etc. And it's just good sense, whether you ride a bicycle or motorcycle, to wear a helmet.
I'm sure you were just venting, since we do have a plethora of rather stupid legislature, but not all Americans are like the ones portrayed via the media.

I have a lot I was gonna say, but I haven't had my morning caffine yet, so I will just tell you that not all American's are like that. And that a lot of American's are fundamentally similar, but its a big ass country, so you will get big differences in the citizens of different areas. Hell I bet people from Alaska are like crazy and don't even speak english or something. I mean I'VE never been there, have you? No I didn't think so. And I bet they all drive sled's that are pulled by bikers who never wear helmets and are on welfare.
That would be so awesome.

Well, unfortunately we live in a society that pays for the people who make stupid decisions/are too stupid to survive without gov't aid.
Under a truly great government, we wouldn't have to fit the bill for nimrods who wanna get themselves braindead. They can't take care of themselves or didn't get insurance, they die. Survival of the fittest.
But don't go waving that socialism crap around. We may not be perfect, but we're a hell of a lot closer than most of the world to being capitalist, the only way to have true freedom.

With great power comes great responsibility. America has great power, and therefore has great responsibility. As a democratic nation, that power is shared (at least in theory) by every one of its citizens. How those individual people choose to wield their power is up to them, and unfortunately, with great power usually comes great arrogance and laziness. Hence, "I don't want to wear a motorcycle helmet because I think it makes me look stupid, regardless of its safety potential."
...Spiderman and mathematical logic...what a wonderful pair.
