I greet Marcus with a handshake.
"Hey mate," he says, and walks in, through my apartment and out on to the balcony. He puts down a six pack of Heineken on the table and sits himself down on one of the chairs: "Do you want me to roll one up?" he asks. I know that this approach is Marc's way of being guilty, and sorry and a good friend, but it's not what I need right now.
"Sure", I say, and sit down across the table.
We smoke weed and we drink. We reminisce about the times we had; going yachting together, going out to parties, formals, and checking out girls at the beach. I ask him about his girlfriend, Cath, who he tells me is going fine. They are fine, he says, then, awkwardly, he tells me he loves her. I am happy for him but I kill the mood a bit by telling him I don't really believe in love so young, but I know how infatuation feels. It annoys me that he uses the word love. He lets the provocation go and we talk about drugs. He knows I sell ecstasy. \ I can tell he disapproves but he doesn't a thing about it. He acts as if dealing is cool.
I ask him what he has been up to lately and just having to ask causes me a pang of grief. This is my only school friend and I do not even know if he is going to university or working or just bumming around with his real mates. He's the only guy at school who knew me and I don't know him anymore. He tells me he is going to move to America to study and he has just been accepted into a big college there. I tell him I will be sorry to see him go and we fall quiet. When you are silent with a good friend, you both feel great. I am grateful for Marc's company but I twitch and fidget until he says exactly what I'm not thinking. "I'm glad we're still friends Jake."

"Hey baby."
Jake smiles; he doesn't know it, but the rush he feels when he hears her voice is the same felt by the thousands of businessmen doing lines of cocaine in white tiled bathrooms at this very moment. For Jake, though, it passes quickly.
"Hey sweetie," he replies, "How are you?"
"I'm ok" she says, "What time are you getting there tonight?"
Alyssa wants to know when to get to the party. She likes to get there about ten minutes before Jake so she can spend some time with her girlfriends. Jake has never asked they stick together at parties but it often turns out that way. They are so in love that they tend to make their way around like a pair of incestuous conjoined twins, sending shivers down each other's backs with kisses to the ear and nibbles of the lobe.
"I don't think I can make it," says Jake, "I've torn a ligament in my ankle." Alyssa isn't shocked by this news because she has been waiting for Jake to get injured playing rugby ever since she first saw him play. She makes all the right noises but secretly she is happy. Jake is always a bit of an embarrassment on the field, and she is sick of all the other girls being able to cheer their boyfriends while she waits on edge as he gets hit harder and harder and struggles harder and harder to remain competitive. Alyssa talks for a bit about how silly rugby is and asks if Jake wants her to come see him.
In all honesty Jake wants nothing more than to see Alyssa tonight, but he doesn't want to hold her back; he's been getting the feeling that she wishes they went out more and also that he was a bit more popular with the boys at his school; a bit cooler, he supposes. He says that it's fine if Alyssa wants to go to the party and that all he is going to do tonight is watch a few videos. He says he's rented some horror movies but he regrets it now; he doesn't want to watch them alone. He says maybe Alyssa should come over if the party is boring. She says maybe she will. They tell each other they love each other and then they hang up.
When she gets off the phone with Jake, Alyssa can't help but feel a little rush. She knows that tonight she can go crazy. She can drink as much as she wants and she can flirt with whoever she wants. She loves Jake, or so she tells herself, but he never really gets drunk like the other boys, so neither does she; except on champagne, over dinner, with Jake. Tonight she wants to laugh so hard it hurts and be stupid and be silly and be the centre of the party. She's going to wear something sexy tonight.

i think when people read one - and only one - post they tend not to enjoy it as much and therefore give a lower rating; i'm more interested in what the regulars have to say.

I'd like this more if it were more of a narrative.
Less telling and more showing, you know?
