Okay, as those of you who have been following my latest posts/reviews, I'd promised a barrage of my music recording work from the 2 week holiday break that I had. And so it begins...
Session #1: "The Chipmunk Song"
Personnel:
---------
CaptainThorns (Dave): Voices of Dave and Alvin, acoustic guitar, electric guitar
Korey: Voices of Simon and Theodore, tenor sax, bass guitar
Captain's Log:
-------------
This song was a bitch to transcribe, especially the harmony parts for Simon and Theodore. Pitch shifting software was my best friend! It was really fun to play though, and I even managed to do it without a capo on my guitars in the horrid keys of Ab/Bb.
NOTABLE MOMENT: be sure to listen for Theodore's "titter" during the bridge. I fell off my chair laughing the first time I heard it pitch-shifted.
Coming In Session #2: "Baby On Board/Goodbye My Coney Island Baby"

Let me ask...
Did you pitch shift the whole song first, then record the vocal tracks to that, then return the music to normal, then shift the vocals up by the same degree you'd shifted the song down?
-----------------------------------------
Nope. Recorded our voices in our normal octaves and everything else normal, and I think Korey just pitch shifted the vocal tracks up 2 octaves (preserving tempo) after the fact. CEP2 makes it pretty easy to do.

That's the way I'd have done it. Easier than using guesswork on how much to shift the vocals, but just like in analog, you'd have to sing the song in a low key while recording.
Just curious.

That's the only thing I miss about analog tape recording...it's much easier to do weird things with your voice. Digital requires that pesky pitch shift function, which is more time consuming. You pulled it off well.

We experimented with some real-time pitch shifting on my MidiVerb effects unit during recording, but it didn't sound the best, so we just went the dry route and used CEP for the pitch shift, which as you said, is time-consuming.

I see you're stripping me of my fans. :P
I might have to remedy that soon.

Yeah, it was kind of a roll-the-tongue thing, like the Spaniards do with their "r"s.

Auto titter +2.
It sounded like the chipmunk was coming onto me.
Good recording, too. This should be a fun little series of yours.
