"A rose is just a vegetable cat-"
The Death of Cats and Roses in: Moods and Tensions pp9, L38. Hope Mirrlees, 1973.
Oh dear.
I present also for your delectation, the worst published poem in the English language. Mirrlees' A Doggerel Epitaph for my Little Dog, Sally (ibid, pp33)
Here lies the dust of my small peke.
She had no need to learn to speak,
For tongues will sometimes tall you lies,
But never will a doggy's eyes.
She had no need of printed book,
For she could read my every look.
She owned but little: harness, ball,
Her basket and my heart, that's all.
And if I hear in death's dark valley
A distant bark, I'll know it's Sally.
This from the woman who wrote paris, Lud-in-the-mist, and can't shut up about Horace. Oh, Hope. What happened. The whole of Moods and Tensions is full of reference to the classics (natch), and visual art. She hardly uses the word 'plastic', which is odd, since it's all over the other stuff. On the whole, it reads like Stevie Smith after a couple of glasses of wine and an Ezra Pound binge. The title should probably have been The Lament of the Greying, Celibate, Dyke. Also, Ms Mirrlees, dear, stop punning on your name. Seriously. It's steps away from writing an acrostic, and if you did that, well, world of pain.
Nobody reads my posts anyway, but scroll back some--good sunday read. Wholesome! and erect? Well, maybe not so much.
Also, the toilet-tree we made over Christmas. Am thinking of sending out greeting cards: "We Shit You a Merry Christmas." Happy New Year, etc.
