so u wanna share a large file..a movie, software, game, full music album, etc...
the problem with that is getting nailed with bandwidth costs
BitTorrent is your solution. users who download your file tap into their upload capacity and
give it to others at the same time. (the more you give, the more you get in return)
a .torrent file does not contain the data (movie, music, etc.) itself but rather just
information about the data you want to download.
you can either download or upload torrent files from or to torrent sites
some examples of torrent sites would be
www.mininova.org
www.isohunt.com
www.torrentbox.com
www.torrentreactor.net
or any other torrent site you can find
when you are looking through files to download, it may say how many seeds and leeches each
file has. a seed is a client who has a complete copy of the data ready to download.
a leech is a client currently downloading the data.
once you have your .torrent file downloaded, you will need to use it to download the actual
data you want. to do this, you'll need a BitTorrent client. You can download a client
from:
www.utorrent.com (easy-to-use)
www.bittorrent.com/download.html (the official bittorrent client)
azureus.sourceforge.net (more complex)
or any other client you can find
once you have a client installed, you can open your downloaded .torrent files in it
and begin downloading the actual data.

Most people who upload torrents for public use don't make a dime off them, and such sites don't charge for them. These aren't people bootlegging movies and selling them on the street for profit. Sites that support the torrents tend to go under often, because they depend solely on donations.
You can cite the illegality of sharing copyrighted material and state that the corporate side doesn't get paid when a kid decides to download a CD or a movie. And I don't know if/how the trackers themselves get paid, etc but to imply BT & P2P are lucrative for the average uploader is untrue. Your Jerry quote supports the view opposing yours; many artists believe in free sharing of music and I'm guessing Jerry would have been the first on that list. Not sure what you were getting at there.

Well, what you're talking about here is stealing the rights to intellectual properties. Personally, I don't illegally download shit. However, I DO download gigs upon gigs of live music free and legally from places like sugarmegs.org, the live music archive; http://www.archive.org/audio/etree.php, etc. LMA has 29,189 full length performances by 1,731 different artists. You can read the endorsement from every single one of those bands to host their shows for free there. The only stipulation is that you can't download it, burn it 100 times, and sell it for a profit.

Go find some bands that play great every night and download their shows and go to fuckin Blockbuster and drop a few bucks.
