"All aboard!"
The conductor looked down at his watch. The time was 3:00. Not quite lunchtime. Not quite dinner.
Across the platform of the depot, down the dusty road beyond, he squinted his eyes to see a lone traveler scurrying to make his departure. Further behind him, in the distance, a pack of wild dogs followed swiftly with hunger in their eyes.
Out of nowhere, a parade of people appeared, blocking the road. All of them were waving flags and holding signs. "Support our troops," they said. "War is peace."
A battalion of soldiers stood in front of them, bayonets drawn. As the traveler approached them he noticed they weren't made of flesh and blood, but were carefully composed of wood and straw. Their eyelids - mere flaps of leather - were stitched shut with twine.
As the crowd chanted louder, the dogs drew nearer.
"This is the final boarding call," the conductor yelped, as the steamy whistle let out a deep, bellowy 'WOOT'. Seconds later, the massive engine wheels began to lumber to life under the force of harnessed steam.
The traveler knew that he was too late. He looked again to where the crowd had been moments before, but they were gone. He turned to the pack of dogs, but they, too, were gone - like a spectre on the breeze.
He took out his train ticket from his pocket and held it in his hands...
But his ticket had turned to dust, and it was only a matter of time before his hands did too.
