Champagne socialism has particularly strong roots in Britain. Anthony Wedgewood Benn the Third (or Tony Benn as he likes to be known), a landed peer with a long and proud tradition. He now wanders around the country, having flung off his upbringing speaking at far left rallies on the evils of the Tories (rightish wing party). I've heard him speak myself - bless him, he is so sincere.
It's easy to cast a bit of grief at old Tony. Having high morals while you're not slumming it seems as fake as the participant observer in sociological research who slums it at Glasto for a few days, then goes back home, has a nice shower, dons his Armani, climbs into his Mercedes and drives off to the billiards hall to discuss his insight with other middle class people.
Then I look at myself. I like to consider myself a liberal left winger. I certainly believe in higher taxation (particularly for the super rich) and support for the poor and disadvantaged. Education and Health are the institutions I feel deserve most funding. I vote as left wing as I can in the believe that this may have some slight bearing on elections (it doesn't ofcourse), and I occasionally donate money to make votes count. My intentions are good.
However I find myself in somewhat of a quandry. You see, when I drive down the street of my village I can't help but pull a face in disgust. I see red faced fatties eating pies and throwing rubbish on the floor. I see pregnant teenage mothers pushing prams smoking and blowing it into the faces of their kid (let alone their unborn child). I see hordes of 14 year olds, sitting on benches, smoking, drinking cider, wearing Burburry and caps with shit teeth and shaven heads.
When I'm in a shop, I hold the door for one of the locals, who steps through, looks at you with confusion, then contempt, before waddling off to the Sunny Delight section to get their dose of tooth rot for the family.
I speak to the cashiers, and receive bewildered stares when I say please and thank you. Helping a young woman get her kid's pram up some stairs is somehow a prelude to mating. When I find any of the following attractive: crusty bangs, council estate face lifts (the hair pulled back so tightly in a greasy ball that the skin is tightened), track suit bottoms (often ghastly pink, and if not, vibrant green), being grossly overweight to the point of sweating when they stand up, bonk eyed glances, rotten teeth (did noone teach these people to brush them?), mumbling accents, spitting on the pavement and calling their foul spawn 'Britney, Mariah, Justin, Shania and Sara (note the lack of 'H' at the end) - well, when I find these things attractive, that's when I sterilise myself.
How can I want greater support for the poor when they are so fucking disgusting? I've got friends whose families are so appallingly charva it hurts. A carriage clock on the mantelpiece, a giant tv, and 7 people sat on chairs staring at the aforementioned tv while Celebrity Big Brother is on, then Dynasty, then M*A*S*H, then Home and Away, then Emmerdale, then El Dorado then....
At this point I start wondering if this is infectious and I have to leave now. NOW GOD DAMN IT.
So I return to my initial thought as I see parents telling children to throw their litter into a bush, to not reprimand them when they spit and when they seem to have no pride in themselves or in their environment. Looking at these people I really wonder is it a case of their own ignorance encouraging them to stay in this situation, as they wallow in their filth - or is it a case of ignorance forcing these people to become these cringe-inducing travesties?
I'm beginning to doubt my politics.

If you ask me, all adults should be responsible for their own actions. There are people who are poor for legitimate reasons, but a good majority do it out of ignorance, stupidity and lack of self-respect.

Welfare should be a temporary solution to a temporary problem; permanent dependence on handouts and a belief of "I am the lower class. I am dependent on the govt for me to live and this is all I can become" just creates further problems.

Celebrity Big Brother this year has been particularly impressive. They pick loathesome characters, and then bore them until they get bitchy and grumpy. It's dark comedy.

In Birmingham people smile and thank you for holding doors, more often than not we explode into song and professional dancers are employed to liven up the street corners should we all feel the need to launch into song. The Red Arrows perform an air show every Wednesday to make everyone feel special and Birmingham's chief export is multi-racial gatherings for corporate photos. On Tuesdays it rains love.
To prove our grit the local boys clubs dodge bullets on Friday and Saturday night plays host to a number of spontaneous competitions of physical strength, by and large though the taxi drivers are civilised, unarmed and non-deviant. The local violence between the blues and the villa is organised and kept out of the way lest it ruin the city's good name. Organised crime is at an all time low and disorganised crime is goverened by strict rules of etiquette and respect.
The only dark cloud on the horizon is the Somalians who threaten to ruin it for everyone.

I had a similar experience while in Australia. Being a bit of a lefty myself, I was of the opinion that Aussies were awfully racist towards aboriginals...etc etc
Then I went to NT and worked in a roadhouse for a while and had one hell of an eye opener. I felt bad every time a derogatory thought crossed my mind, but man, those guys did nothing to help themselves. The majority of 'em spent the day lying on the meridian drinking goon, then they'd come into the BP and spend 50 bucks on chicken wings and such, while drooling all over themselves (and me if they got the chance) stinking of piss, BO and whatever crap they'd lain in in the long grass.
Please note, I'm not actually racist, but I can only speak to my own experiences.

I've said I find this a contentious issue. I don't set out to dislike these people, I just find myself disliking them.
When I was on the underground in London recently I kept finding myself looking at Muslims with backpacks. I know it's ridiculous and retarded, but I kept doing it. I felt like a bad human being.

A hatred/distrust of pikeys isn't a racist issue.
Similar feeling towards a majority Black ghetto can be construed as racist by those who wish to make an issue of it, and the fact that the majority of ne'er-do-wells in a run down area are Black (or other minority) can be used by racists to bolster their cause.
As you said, we should be allowed to voice our distaste of certain social groups without it becoming a race issue. Similarly, people need to realise that positive discrimination in favour of minorities (in selections for Police recruits, for instance) is neither helpful or fair.

I agree, I don't hate pikeys cos they're pikeys. I hate them because they're (generally) lazy, dirty, trouble making thieves who wouldn't know an honest day's work if it hit them in the face. I feel the same way about the guy who lives down the road from me and as far as I know, he's got no pikey roots.
I think the problem is that there's way too much political correctness out there. To say you hate a group of people collectively doesn't necessarily mean that you hate them all individually. It's in most people's nature to generalise

So you can hate a group of people for their behavior, but if you hate a group of people for their behavior and they are another color it is bad?
We should immediately accept all faults of a person just because they are a different color?
I don't hate hard working respectful people, of any color. At the same time I can't stand ghetto welfare moms with four kids her grandma takes care of and she can't spell their name.
I think a lot of people outside of America, especially in countries that aren't racially mixed and see some Americans disdain for ghetto trach and confuse it with rascism. If you hate the actions of a group, not their skin color it isn't rascism. It is no different then hating pikeys or chavs.

I have no problem with people coming here to work, the Irish have been refugees in one form or another all over the world for a few hundred years. Everyone deserves a fair go.

I thought that while I was writing it, but in fact, the answer is simple. When they walk into the shopping centres, sometimes they have to remove their caps so that the CCTV can have a better go at identifying them.
Or they fight, and in the resultant scuffle/rape caps fall off. It's unwise to stand and watch however, this is seen as provocative. Actually, looking at them at all is provocative. Or not looking at them. It's a difficult system, I'm still trying to work out all the variables.

They bitch and moan til they get a halting site - all mod cons etc... then within 2 minutes flat there's dirty old sofas, burnt out shit and mangy dogs and kids running wild and they're bitching and moaning cos the facilities are so shit and they want new stuff.
I fuckin 'ate pikeys.
Oh and they're all inbred and look like that kid with the banjo in deliverance.
