A leaf crunched gently beneath her left foot as she stepped off of the median into the street. She darted across to the other side, and lifted herself up onto the raised curb. She looked longingly into the window of a house, not to different than her own. The light of the dining room glinting gently off of the fine cystals decorating the table, casting small droplets of light out of the rounded window into the eyes of those willing to recieve it. It was hauntingly beautiful that night, the sun letting go of its grasp on the earth, desperately trying to cling on with its rays cast upon the clouds. The remaining leaves on the nearly barren trees were a burnt-orange, and as the wind whistled through them, it was hard to differentiate them from the whispering of the long forgotten hymns that used to fill these streets.
"At night she spreads her wings
She dreams of bigger things
She floats above the town
She sings without a sound"
As she gazed longingly into the building, she noticed a fire escape, leading up to the top of a small complex. She reasoned that the sights and sounds would be even more beautiful atop the small flat, so she sauntered over to the bottom rung. With a deep breath, she began to climb, gazing down time and time again, at the ever increasing distance between her and the pavement.
"She can be anywhere at all
She can be anyone at all"
As she finished her climb, she gently hummed the old song her mother sang to her as a child. She felt filled with warmth, and a sense of euphoria took ahold of her. She climbed up onto the top of the building and looked about her, taking in the serene beauty of this veiw that was above the skyline.
"A glow and then a shine
What she hopes she will find
Tonight, tonight"
She wanted the moment to last forever, a shining memory in her average life. The kids would be getting hungry soon, and she knew her time here was limited, but oh how she wanted it to last forever. At that very moment, she knew she felt completely at peace, and wanted to always have this clarity in her mind. Knowing that the birds would be landing, she looked out towards the flooded rice fields. What she saw was nothing new, thousands of birds landing in the surrounding farming communities, but in this moment of clarity, she finally appreciated their descent.
"She's got a picture in her mind
She can be anyone at all"
So she took a step, and it turned into a walked, which turned into a run, which ended with a dive, and in that dive, she knew what it was to fly.
"At night she changed her mind
She left the world behind "
