As I pulled into the parking lot at work today, as song came on the radio that instantly brought me back to another time, another place. I sat in my car waiting for the song to end, soaking up every nuance of the melody for a day long gone by.
After it ended, it made me think of other songs that marked both milestones and times that were little more than ordinary to anyone but myself. So, come with me and experience some of the soundtrack of my life.
Sad Eyes--Robert John. I was 12 years old at a Knights of Columbus "Squires" dance. Stylishly dressed in my brown velour v-neck pullover (the heigth of nadsat fashion), I was in the throes of "love" with my first ever "girlfriend", that is, the first girl I ever kissed. This was the slow song that I first made out to.
Joes Garage--Frank Zappa. Freshman year of High School. Class bus trip to D.C. The guy next to me, who was a bit weird, had this tape (yes, this is what we used before CD's) and it was my first real experience hearing Zappa. It was cool for the fifty times or so. This also was the first and last time the school let a bunch of ninth graders loose on the nations capital. We actually had some kids end up in Baltimore.
I Love Rock and Roll--Joan Jett. High school. 11th grade. Riding in my friends' piss yellow Datsun B-210 on Friday night trying to find a place that would sell a six pack to obviously underage kids. This is back in the days when two beers would give me a righteous buzz. Ahhh, youth.
Hold The Line--TOTO. High school. Just a fantastic summer day. I was 17, driving to the beach at Dam Neck in my '75 Vega and rocking out with my sweet Audiovox stereo/tape deck (that I installed myself). The day seemed to last forever.
We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off--Jermaine Stewart. Ft. Bragg, Fayette-Nam, North Carolina, the summer of my Junior year of college. I was in a shitty, dusty World War 2 era barracks with a badly shorn high & tight haircut having the six week "experience" of ROTC advanced camp. This song was on someones boom box and I distinctly remember looking out the window wondering "What the fuck am I doing here?" and wishing I was anywhere else.
It Takes Two--Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock--Ft. McClellan, Anniston, Alabama. I was 21, and a freshly commissioned 2LT in the Army MP Corps. The song was bumping and I was busy buying every girl in the club a drink and being shot down worse than the Mexican Air Force.
Better Days--Citizen King--I was 25 and on my first blue water sailing trip, from New York to Maryland. It was the middle of summer, but the temperature never got above 65 degrees and it rained every day for two weeks. Of course, I had packed only T-shirts and shorts and proceeded to freeze my narrow ass off. While thawing out and drying off at a crappy marina in Delaware, this song came on the radio. When the lyrics said "I've seen better days", I wholeheartedly agreed with them.
Amazing Grace--Traditional--Last month at the memorial service for another in a ever growing line of police officers funerals. When those bagpipes hit, it takes my breath away and makes me cry. Everytime.

Lit'l Pecker reminds me of all the assholes that had the uncanny ability to change a simple infraction into multiple felonies

How sweet the sound. The pipes hit me too. They get me deep inside, like nothing else can.

Wow. 8 songs complete the soundtrack of your life?
Your life must suck extreme ass.

If you read the post, you would have seen it was just a snapshot, not a complete picture. And my life is excellent, thanks. You can get back to fucking your sister on that feces encrusted matress now.

I've been wanting to do a post like this.
We had a bus trip to D.C. once, too. It was my first exposure to the Violent Femmes, which was cool and all, but not for 2 hours straight. I still can't believe they let us roam free, either.
The bagpipes get me every time.
