I often felt like a rain dog.
The rain dog digs a hole under the fence and leaves the security of his yard and home in search of what is on the other side. His owner calls for him to come back but the lure of what awaits is too great. He may think to himself: "ahhh, freedom! once I get laid and my fill of exploring I will go back and live as I did in the confines of my yard but be able to reflect on my adventures and satisfy this burning curiosity".
The first days are bliss. New adventures around every corner, Lots of cats and bitches in heat to chase, and new friends made in far off neighborhoods. When the grumbling of hunger starts he realizes he better start marking his course to get back home to the regular care he has grown accustomed to because stolen meals in odd places do not occur with ease.
When the rain starts he remembers how nice it was up on the porch laying on his blanket warm and fed. Every venue he seeks for shelter he is met with a boot to his ass, and the new friends he had made turn on him when it comes to sharing their food . Distraught lonely hungry and cold he begins his trip back to the comfort of home but becomes lost and confused as the rain has washed away his marked trail to home.
In circles he travels, becoming desperate he shoots off in several different directions only to become more and more lost. Cars honk and screech as his paws become raw from treading the concrete and hot top. Soaked to the bone and famished he is snared by a rope and pole, thrown in a stinky truck and locked in a cage inside a building filled with the desperate noise of other lost souls.
With no hope, and no way to escape he awaits his fate.
Sometimes the owner truly loves his dog and misses him. Sometimes the owner has been as desperate and sick with worry as the dog. Sometimes that owner diligently searches and posts flyers and knocks on doors restlessly looking for his lost companion.
When the owner finds his rain dog, the anger, betrayal and disappointment vanish away with a flush overwhelming joy.
