It would appear as though the "peace loving Palestinians" went ahead and showed the world their true colors by overwhelmingly voting for Hamas. For those of you who live with your head in your ass or under a rock Hamas is an Islamic terrorist organization that has perpetrated numerous attacks against Israelies for years now. In the fashion of Islamic hate speech Hamas routinely calls for the destruction of Israel, not a seperate Palestinian state, just the total destruction of Israel.
Its time for secular humanist to stop trying to relate to Islamic fanatacism, for crying out loud if you think Christianity has an agenda then stop and research Islam. These people do not want peace, for years I have heard the media talking heads try and convince me that Palestinians just want to peacefully co-exist with Israel. If the results of this last election does not convince you otherwise, nothing will. We cannot even begin to hope for peace between Jews and Islam, this is a feud that has gone on for thousands of years, and no level of diplomacy will solve it.
The Palestinians have been refugees now for how many years? Why havent their Arab brothers offered them sanctuary in Jordan, Egypt, etc? Its simple Islam hates the Jews and the Palestinians become the perfect excuse to propogate anti-Israel hate. Islam will never peacefully co-exist with Judaism, Christianity, Atheism, or any other non Islamic ideal, when will the world learn this lesson?
The world is sitting on top of a powder keg and the wick just became alot shorter. If you lived in Israel what would you feel right now? Would you feel comforted knowing that one of the largest terrorist organizations in the world is now the legitimate government of the Palestinians? Would you be happy knowing that Iran the land that you have given to the Palestinians as a sign of goodwill has led to the further empowerment of terrorist? Or how about that whole Iran thing? What will the rest of the world do? Will we continue to demand that Israel make concessions to terrorist or will we nut up and stop tolerating radical Islam and its threats.

Does anyone else get the impression that the guys at Hammas HQ are all huddled together going,"We won? Shut the fuck up. Seriously Akmed, that's not funny. What do you mean you're not kidding? Oh SHIT! What the hell are we supposed to do now?!"

I was watching the News Hour on PBS last night and it was funny how EVERYONE they spoke with was just sort of dumbfounded that this could or did happen.

I WILL be proven wrong later, but I think I've got a good feeling about this. I imagine it would be fairly easy for a group like Hammas to fight and be pissed off about being excluded for so long . . . but to suddenly have the world community turn around and say, "okay, here's your shot, here's your one shot for honest legitimacy, don't fuck it up" is kind of exciting.

Spoken like a true liberal. Freedom fighters and resistance do not target innocent civilians. They target military sites, goverment sites (if it's a revolution we're talking about), etc. Not crowded bus stations.
------------------------------------------
That's not neccesarily true. I remember reading stories of partisan violence towards 'collaborators' during the occupation of France, and I'm sure we all remember the episode of Band of Brothers when they went to Holland and the women who slept with the german menfolk had their head shaved and where cast out and that.

"We cannot even begin to hope for peace between Jews and Islam, this is a feud that has gone on for thousands of years, and no level of diplomacy will solve it. "

I find this hard to believe, specifically numerically, when most studies state that Muhammad was born around 570AD. Unless of course by "thousands," you mean around 1416 years or so.

+1 for overall point
-1 for faulty math and grammar.

"That is the key here, Hamas is just as bad as any one of those previously named organizations, yet the Palestinians elected them."
----
you mean to say, WE think they're bad - the average Palestinian on the other hand thinks they're okay.
And they do have somewhat of a point - the present Palestinian Authority is notoriously corrupt (thanks to Yasir Arafat), and the Hamas have offered to clean things up - much like the NSDAP.

Palestinian elections? Isn't that like the Amish holding their own elections for King of Amish Country? What real authority does a Palestinian "parliament" hold, other than telling it's fellow mosque-goers what direction to pray to?
----------

Haha, true, but it is a sign of what the people want. If they had voted in a group that wants peace with Israel, that is a sign that most palestinians want peace, this is a sign that they don't want to coexist with Israel.

I don't like Hamas either. I despise their deeds.

But I think this could be a chance. Let them try. You never know.

This is democracy. Let the cogwheels turn.

I don't like to admit this; but I think now is the time to give it a try.

I disagree with one point of yours. Hamas did run as the conservative party, but won the election due to it's generous wellfare plans.

Hammas target selection is fine, they target civilians.

I admit looking at the numbers, I would feel little sympathy for israel, but try and find any other conflict in the world where a group takes the abuse that Israel does and doesn't strike back harder.

Hamas will be asked to renounce violence publically. If they do not, they will have their hands tied on options other than to continue the campaign of suicide bombers.

If they continue with their mission to "destroy Israel", they will have their cities raided as the IDF grabs everything back they can...and start driving Palestinians to the exit and kicking them out the door without slowing down.

Iran is part of this as well... Iran gets nuclear weapon, Iran gives said weapon to Hamas, Hamas blows it up in Tel Aviv, 50%+ of Israel is dead from the blast.

Fun stuff.

I have to go so I wont be camping this post, but quickly to the poster who stated that Hamas ran on a fiscally conservating ticket against government corruption.

I think any honest individual with a working knowledge of American politics would conceed that both the Democrats and Republicans both have acted corrupt presently and in the past. That being said suppose the Neo-Nazis, or Black Panthers, or KKK, or some equally vile and offensive organization produced a candidate for president of the United States. Do you think that candidate would win? No way, because to sensible Americans the ideals these organizations stand for are appalling. It would not matter how honest and good the platform that they ran on would be Americans just would not go for it. That is the key here, Hamas is just as bad as any one of those previously named organizations, yet the Palestinians elected them.

This Palestinian Israeli conflict has nothing to do with land or rule, sure they claim it is. This has to do with radical Islam and its disdain for anything non Muslim and especially disdain for Jews.

Really? I am a little rusty on my Irish history but did the IRA ever say that no protestants could be allowed to live in Ireland? That all protestants in Ireland had to be killed. Because that is the message that hammas has been sending for years.

I could be wrong here as well, but I thought the IRA tried to target police, and other govt employees (not justifying them). How many times did they blow up school busses that were filled with people, or try to blow up shopping centers filled with people, or specifically shoot at a woman and a child traveling unarmed in a car? These are all actions common to Hammas.

Also, in 1970, the PLO tried to forcibly take over Jordan...they were repelled, and told never to try something like that again, and were given money by the rich Arabs to appease them.

forget Hamas, I think the National Socialist Workers Party should run in Palestine - THAT would get soem attention.

No but a huge step backwards in the peace process. Israel gives them Gaza strip, and look what they do, they elect a party that has repeatedly declared that they will not rest until there is no Israel. How do you think Israel will react, how would you react?

the only good that could possibly come of this, and I doubt it, is that Hammas will have to reform itself and recognize Israel. If that doean't happen I hope the US, and the EU cut off all aid.

No doubt the conflict has been bloody, however since Israel has become a recognized country the majority of Palestinian blood spilled has been in retaliation for terrorist actions against Israel. That being said Israel, the US, the EU and others have been trying to work out a peace accord with the Palestinians for a long time now. Israel had just given Palestinians the West Bank (Sumarea and Judea), but nothing appeases these people. The world is trying to create peace when one side just will not accept it. Palestinains just reinforced that, they dont want peace its time that we realize that.
