Chinatown, New York. Wonderful, dirty, lovely, enchanting, confusing, smelly Chinatown. T-shirts that say "Take me Drunk, I'm Home" sold next door to carved bodhisattvas. The Mahayana Buddhist temple with its bright red peaks, smoky interior, fortunes for a dollar donation, an ancient woman rattling animal hooves. The New Big Wang restaurant - look in the window, in the green tanks, at the half-dead eels resting laconically on a bed of gasping fish. Picturesque noodle houses with soft lighting, mahoghany tables and bars, beautiful young folks chatting and giggling. If it's St. Patty's Day, you might be lucky enough to encounter a giant drunk Irishman, laughing uproariously, wearing one of those Oriental beanies with the long tassel of black hair hanging down the back.
The streets, choked person-to-person with the occasional ten feet of empty space. Pedestrian traffic jams while the large Midwestern lady in front of you stops dead in her tracks to try and figure out where Mott Street is. The pounding of Taiko drums from some distant, amazing sound system. The chatter of five different languages in a crowd of at least twenty ethnically different faces. Yapping toy dogs. Live turtles for $10. Flowers, gardens in front of stores, basketball courts, whole pigs hanging by their feet. People are black, yellow, brown, pink, old, young, loud, quiet, gorgeous, hideous, rushing, slow, streaming endlessly through these urban veins...I love this place. Chinatown.

i don't know why. but that didn't make me think of chinatown in new york at all. are you sure that's right? you didn't capture the smell of random burning carcasses, urine and BO. or the scary low ceilings in the stores and all the strange little japanese toys you can find next to buddha pillows underground. or the teahouses or cranky 18 yr old chinese girls watching the food.
i just don't think you got the essence of it.
and it wasn't nsfw.
