electrictoothsyndrome started this in his post...http://www.ubersite.com/m/83109, but I felt it needed it's own post.
I've been discussing with friends, relatives, coworkers, homeless people on the street recently about the almost certainty of Hillary Clinton running for the presidency in 2008.
I'll get this out in the open right away...I don't agree with 95% of Hillary's positions on the main topics. Having said this, I want to point out that she has become quite moderate in the last year following Bush's election. Her new stance on Illegal immigration is one of those instances.
What this post is about though, isn't her political views, or whether she could be elected. It's what I've been hearing from the various people I've been talking to that this post is about. When I bring up the question about whether they would vote for her or not, I'm getting responses like "It's about time a woman was president.", and "Of course I would vote for her, I think a woman president is what this country needs."
I respond with questions like, what about Hillary do you like? foreign policies, social policies, stance on the war, etc. And to my shock, the majority who say they would vote for her are justifying their decision solely on her being a woman. I'm not sexist, I think a woman president would be great, but only if she had similar views to my own, could I vote for her. I can't justify voting for anyone, whether they're Black, White, Male, or Female on the sole basis of their race, or gender.
It scares me that only 1/3 of eligable voters vote in America. It makes me shit my pants when I hear that a portion of that 30% are voting based on things like this.
My intention isn't to start a Right vs. Left argument with this post, but I'm curious to see if anyone on here feels similarly to me, or not.
So, Uber. What do ya say?
Would YOU vote for a candidate based solely on their Race/Gender? let me know.

A good percentage of voters who supported Pauline Hanson (conservative anti-immigrationist) in the Queensland State election did so because they thought she was good-looking.

Politics...meh. I don't discuss them
(Insert sarcasm) Part of me hopes Hillary wins, and I'll tell you why. It has NOTHING to do with the issues. Finally, SNL would have decent fodder again. Comics around the world could rejoice. Hillary in office and Billy with nothing to do... oh, that sounds like a sitcom right there. Funny stuff.

Well, off the top of my head... She supports a woman's right to choose, she is a strong proponent of civil rights, she supports domestic partnership rights for gay couples, and she is in favor of higher federal funding for health care.
The only issues I can think of that I don't agree with her on are the absolute right to gun ownership guaranteed by the second amendment (I'm for it, she's against it) and drug laws (I am in favor of decriminalizing marijuana and she is not).
--------------------------------------
Jeanneee,
Those are pretty broad subjects, that pretty much follow the party line.
I would think that before you say you would endorse a candidate you would like to know what they think should be done in Iraq, what should be done about immigration (other then just saying reform).
I would be suprised if you found any official statement she has made on these topics. the more she can avoid real answers the more she can she is for whatever is popular.
I am sure the Republicans will put out a candidate who is equally vague on real issues, but I am suprised at the number of people who say they like her without her saying what she wants to do on so many of these key issues.

I feel the same way whenever I hear black leaders talking about "community", because by "community" they mean "black people voting for black people"
whereas
If white people insisted on only voting for white people then not only would the black leaders freak, but no black person would ever be elected to anything ever.
Oh but that's different.
somehow
So no I am no more likely to vote for a woman simply because we both sit to pee. In fact, my own dearly loved (cough) representative is none other than the charming Sue Myrick who rather infamously albeit locally had an affair and then went full court press on Bill Clinton for similarly abhorrent behavior.
However, it is true that women and men are held to different standards. A woman boss who is tough is called a bitch and yet a man with those exact same qualities is a go getter.
Its bullshit really it is.
Hillary is far too polarizing to get elected. Maybe she will run, but I doubt she'll get out of the primaries.

Well I am about halfway through her topics, and it seems to be filled with fluff. Nothing actually pins here down in any controversial issue.
Civil rights seem only to refer to minorities, women have their own section. No mention of free speech or "wiretapping" issues, but support for hate crimes is pretty important.
Her national security states no policy or strategy she wishes to follow, only that she supports the troops.
I don't know how anyone could be in favor of someone with such an elusive agenda being a presidential candidate.

I vote for the better candidate, regardless.
In 2000 I wasn't quite old enough to vote. Had I been it would've been for Bush. '04 I voted for Kerry. In the last Iowa gubernatorial election I voted for Gross over Vilsack.
If Hilary ran I wouldn't vote for her, regardless of whether or not she was the Dem's nominee. I'd end up voting third party or leaving that space blank before I voted for a candidate I don't think is one that would best serve the US.

Like the post.
I would not vote for HC for the same reason I would not vote for Jesse Jackson. Neither has sufficient experience to do the job.
The Clintons moved to NY after the election specifically to establish a residence in an exceptionally liberal state from which HC could get a senate seat. That was so obvious it was stupid, though she knew that the media would gloss over it and they certainly did so. She did not campaign outside NYC, Buffalo, and Albany, beacuse that is where the liberal centers are. The rest of the state is largely moderate Republican and she knew she could overwhelm their numbers by taking the urban poor in the metropolitan areas. Idiot New Yorkers elected her partly because she wasn't Republican and partly because they thought it'd be neat-o. I can see them at the ballots, "Heh! Hold my welfare check and watch this! I'm votin' for a broad!" Pitiful.
She has 'moderated' her rhetoric on several issues simply in an attempt to gain some support from the moderate block. She has not changed the few opinions on acual issues that she has made public, only the language in which they are couched. She is as liberal a wolf as ever, in her $1000 sheep's clothing.
With apologies to Douglas Adams, someone who wants to be President so desparately should under no circumstances be allowed to do so. Her motivation is clear: to become President using any means necessary so that she can show up her snivelling husband. That is not good enough for my vote, and I hope it's not good enough for yours.
Sorry to rant, but she is spiteful and needs to be watched.

I'm sure Douglas Adams is smiling somewhere. And I thought of that quote too.
Hillary is REALLY power hungry. More so than Bush or Bill. I don't trust her. I think more Dem's are rooting for Mark (is it Mark or John? Whichever) Warner to win the Dem presidency.

It's hard to tell what she stands for nowadays. She keeps moving toward the middle in hopes that voters will forget what she USED to stand for. Noodle's right IMO, she's just going to say what she needs to to get elected, then flip back to what she really believes.
"Democrats should know they can't win by simply being anti Bush."
One would have thought they learned that from the last election, since that was Kerry's entire platform.

I'm not much for token minorities, mostly because it's already been done. Want your female world leader? Try Elizabeth I (there were many others before her, but let's not obsess; she's a famous point of reference.) First democratically elected female world leader? Try Margaret Thatcher. If you're trying for famous firsts, why don't we go with the first democratically elected salad fork, or the first defective hard drive to become a tinpot dictator of a small third world country.
If Hillary makes the white house again (with all the bad press, she probably won't,) she should do so on issues. As it stands, I think McCain is set to humiliate her, and I think the Democrats know that. They're doing this to make a statement and show how flipping progressive they are, which, as a Democrat, pisses me off to no end.
And why the hell did you capitalize White, Black etc? They're not even ethnicities; they're just colors.
