I wonder what America is.
Is it the power all these politicians try to make it out to be?
Is it as economically sound as the president would have you believe?
Is it respected?
After watching the State of the Union last night I think it's fair to say that America is a place of true believers--and not much more. It's the true believers that enjoy being lied to--they enjoy spouting off misrepresented facts and statistics, and they'll sit in front of their 52 inch TV all day long, just waiting to catch a new tidbit about America's supremecy which they can take to the bank.
They take these lies to church, to work, to protests. They sit to dine and re-speak the doublespeak to each other and anyone else within ear shot. This is how they believe.
Not by challenging their beliefs, but by circling the wagons, by isolating opposing viewpoints, by censoring the truth and spinning every disaster (man-made or other) into another vote-grabbing fear tactic.
America, you ain't what you think you are.
You are polluted--air pollution, acid rain; the US is the largest single emitter of carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels; water pollution from runoff of pesticides and fertilizers; limited natural fresh water resources in much of the western part of the country require careful management. You chew up the only planet we have, turn it into something flashy and cheap and then buy it off of yourselves until the next 'big thing' hits the markets and you're forced to buy it.
America--you're not as big as you think you are--the world's third-largest country by size (after Russia and Canada) and by population (after China and India).
America--you're economy is in the stink--annual revenues of $2.119 trillion look nice until you realize that expenditures are $2.466 trillion. That and you're in the largest debt period in the entire history of the world.
America--you suck too much oil. And that's fine if it's your oil, but it's not--it's the world's.
You've bullied, conspired and invaded other soveriegn nations to keep your blissfully ignorant society drinking as much of the black gold as they can handle--

You don't stop there either--fresh water, natural gas, precious minerals and metals--you take from the rest of the world so that you can satisfy your own civilians--and then have the gall to tell the rest of the world that you are our leader. A light house for freedom? More like a tower of lies.

You accuse other nations of trampling on the rights of its citizens--but the facts here are perfectly clear--military and homeland defense spending is up, up and up since GW and Co. stole the office, spending on social programs and education have fallen for the fourth consecutive year. How can the richest country in the world spawn some of the dumbest people in the world? I suppose it doesn't matter--eventually all your children will be conscripted and off fighting the continuos 'War for Oil' that you will wage on the rest of the planet.

America--what are you? A country of ignorant, wasteful hooligans? A culture trapped by 'Marketing Experts' and Art for Profit? A people so tired of how poor the state of the union actually is that they have given up hope and decided to leave the running of their lives to people that would prefer to end their lives and replace them with robots?
You have become laughable as a country, being led by an almost laughable government, getting into situations so tragic that they become hilarious--hilarious that the true believers of 'America' can't see the destruction they've inflicted from the tinted windows of their SUV's.

+2 for a first post that you actually put some thought into. However, how does America affect you? Are we siphoning gas out of your car to support our gluttonous ways? Are we stopping you on the street and telling you how superior we are? sobasically, fuck off.
The problem with America isn't the increasingly larger hole we are digging ourselves into (economically, environmentally, diplomatically, etc), it's the people who stand on the sidelines of corruption like Dallas cowboy cheerleaders, hoping if they scream loud enough they'll get to sniff the jockstrap of their favorite running back. Pussies. Believe it or not, they're a minority here. But most of us are busy staring up, at the edge of the hole, wondering where the sun went, while the diggers keep on digging (can you dig it?). But don't worry. The average person will feel the crunch soon, and despite what you think, Americans aren't cowards.
I think that soon, maybe twenty years or so, enough people will be pissed about what's going on to do something about it. Revolution? I doubt it. Our government is easily moldable, both by those who would corrupt it and those who would change it for the better. Don't forget, American government, at it's fundamental level, is all about the people. And when the people are ready for change, it'll happen.
So go ahead and hate America, it is the cool thing to do now, right? But remember, America isn't it's economy or it's allies or even the land it occupies. What America IS, is the people, our spirit, what the Germans called 'volks gheist'.
Am I wrong and your right? possibly. But I live here. I see what's happening to this country and how most people feel about it. I know Americans, lots of them. I know how we, as a people think, and act. We won't let this country go to shit.

Fuck the Canucks! Take their resouces, rape their woman and desecrate the Stanley Cup by awarding it to money-made expansion teams like Tampa Bay.

I don't doubt that those figures show we are consuming more oil and natural gas than are produced, but think about it.
THAT IS NOT PHYSICALLY POSSIBLE.
The oil and natural gas is being burned right? Then obviously it has been exhumed from the ground by SOMEONE.
And Bush didn't steal the office. He was elected. Despite how pissed off liberals are, he was elected.

The point of reserves are to be used at some point. You don't just save everything up and never use it. Once you start using them, you just need to plan to replace them or cease requiring them later. There is nothing wrong with it, it's just a matter of planning, and my arguement is in a "Look at how bad you are being!" post, it is a weak point. If it was our oil/gas before, we can use it however we want.

This was a very good post. And I agree with most of it. However in deffence of the Yanks (and don't forget I'm surrounded by them right now) most of these accusations can be thrown to a greater or lesser degree to the whole of the Western World.
