The old man sat quietly watching the birds as they circled, round and round looking for the opportunistic morsel that found its way to the ground. Blue, green, iridescent, up close they were colorful and beautiful but still wild and untamed. His breath could be seen, each breath, rhythmic, as if a machine were expelling a vapor upon completion of some unseen task or tool.

On the bench next to him were his "possibles"; his worldly possessions, encased in a weathered leather duffel. His mustache was white with frost and his old woolen pants were replete with patches and pulls having been worn for weeks on end.

The birds now came close and eyed the bread that he had saved from his breakfast which seemed so long ago; saved just for these, his friends. Slowly, deliberately, he palmed some of the crusts and exposed them to his friends, circling. Several of the feathered clan began to alight near his feet and bobbed their heads as if pleading for the forage that he promised. One by one they came to his old, gnarled, and arthritic hand to partake of the feast that he offered. Several others stood in wait now as their fellows gobbled the bread as sustenance against the frigid city air.

Minutes passed, the crumbs were gone, and birds lost interest in the old man and his promise. He slowly rose from the park bench, dusted the light snow that had covered his grey woolen pants, and tucked the old leather duffel under his arm. His frost covered mustache could not hide the smile that controlled his face. So a few are gone he thought....Ah....Squab for
Supper.

I would stop to listen to him. Everyone has a story to tell
and his would be interesting.

Homer: You like parties, huh? Well, I just remembered they're having
a big one down at the waterfront this weekend.

Marge: You didn't remember that. You just saw it on TV.
