There is a moments hesitation and then the chase is on.
I can feel the adrenaline pumping and the lactic acid building in my muscles as I pound out the distance to escape my enemy. I have to concentrate on reaching my sanctuary as the feeling of disappointment would be too much to bear, particularly with my wife and son watching from a safe distance.
I am no longer the young man that I once was. There are many younger hunters in my tribe but something compels me to carry on. The day that I can no longer outrun my foe is not yet upon me and until that time I will continue to hunt for the elusive rewards. I don't know whether it is an inability to concede that I don't have my youth or if it is purely the thrill of the chase that keeps me going. What I do know is that when I can not compare to the youthful hunters, some of whom seem little more than children to me, my life will be over. Defeated by the very thing I seek to outwit.
It always amazes me that the relatively short distance to my haven seems to be such a long way when faced with an adversary such as I face. Every step feels like a lifetime, every breath seems to sear my lungs with a white hot heat, yet I still try to run faster, fully aware that my tribe depends on me to make it. Failure is not an option.
Every time hunting season comes around, people speculate that I will not be able to lead the tribe in their quest, yet every time I return. I almost feel as if some of my people are willing me to fail, yet still these same people revel in my victory every time I outwit my opponent.
I can see the place where my antagonist cannot harm me and I push harder still to reach my goal. I can hear it closing in on me, that spoiler of dreams that seeks to destroy me.
The sound it makes as it draws closer is perhaps the most terrifying part of the chase. A sound which is almost a dog whistle, barely audible to the human ear.
That sound means something different to every hunter, be it failure or success, but for me it signifies one thing and one thing alone. A final push towards survival.
I draw every last ounce of energy in my body and make one final push for my refuge.
The last few steps are always fraught with anticipation. My age is against me and every chase is a closer one than the previous encounter. Even when my exertions are done, I still have to wait for my peers to let me know that I have escaped capture again.
I lunge with all my will for my preserve and wait for my colleagues to congratulate or mourn me.

pretty damn well-written, dave.
technically, in the colonies, our baseball parlance "tribe" refers to the cleveland team, the indians, whose nickname is said "tribe".
i enjoyed the hell out of this. spring training, wooT!
coincidentally, my last post was about a tribe and a hunt...

I know of the "tribe" in question, mainly due to the movie, "Major League" which coincidentally stars Charlie Sheen to pacify the comment below.
Could you mail me, when you can.

You can play in a Yahoo league, and know little to nothing about the sport since yahoo keeps stats and rankings. In fact, I won my office's fantasy basketball league last year, and I know zero about the game.

Another month until spring training starts.
I'm thinking about putting a fantasy baseball league together.

Count me in Bob.
I have to admit to having a soft spot for the old "rounders".
I will happily be the sacrificial lamb of the league.
