It had been an unusually mild winter and the trend seemed to be carrying on into early spring.
The roses would be blooming early this year.

February 14 1990
---------------------
She couldn't remember ever being as excited as she was that morning. Her first real date and she knew she would be the youngest girl invited to the Valentines dance.
It had been tough for her the last two years, with her mother remarrying. She had been forced to leave her old school and all her friends to move in with her new step-father and brother. They had both been nice enough to her but it had been hard, after so long of it being just the two of them, to adjust to living in a new "family".
JJ had made it all worthwhile. She had the biggest crush on him from day one and that had only increased as she got to know him. He was her step-brother's friend, but he always went out of his way to make her feel as though she belonged, including her in their activities. It helped that he was a popular kid at her new school, which made making friends her own age so much easier.
Now he had invited her to the dance. He could have asked anyone and he chose her. Her friends were so jealous. She had never dared to dream that he saw her as anything more than just his friend's kid sister but now, it seemed, he did.
When he had arrived to pick her up, he had looked so good in his tux that she could barely speak. He looked every inch the perfect gentleman.
Later at the dance, when he asked her to take a walk with him, she never hesitated. Most of the other couples would disappear from time to time to, she assumed, make out.
The first kiss was one that she would never forget, even in the less than luxurious back seat of JJ's mother's car. As his hands began to drift towards her chest she felt her excitement and nerves growing. It was only when he began to head towards the unexplored territory between her legs that she hesitated.
She didn't want to seem like a child, yet she was reluctant to carry on. He was understanding yet persistent He assured her that everything would be alright. He promised that no-one would ever know. As his fingers slid to her most private area she gave herself up to his advances.

This time it had been her doing the asking.
It had taken her a long time to get over the fact that the whole school seemed to know that JJ had reached third base with her, but with time the gossip and the hurt faded. She was unable to stop the feelings that she still had for him and had turned to him in her hour of need.
Her first long term relationship with the guy who she thought would be the one, had broken down the week before Valentines. When she heard that JJ was back from college she had called and he had readily accepted her invitation.
How she ended up in his bed she was never really sure, yet the following morning when he told her that she was unequivocally the only girl for him, she believed him with all her heart.

As she stood , in her flowing white gown, she had a moments doubt that she was doing the right thing.
The feeling of despair that she had felt when she heard he had left early to return to college, without even speaking to her, returned to her for a split second. When he had called her, weeks later and explained, she had accepted his explanation without hesitation.
She quickly pushed it to the back of her mind.
It was the perfect Valentines wedding. The early spring sunshine made an appearance for the photographs. Both of their families had been delighted with the coupling of their children, but the most perfect part had been the vows which they had written themselves.
"In everything I ever do,
I offer it to you, truly.
With everything I ever have,
I give it to you, truly.
In every minute of every day,
You have my love, truly."

She walked away from the hospital in a daze. She couldn't believe that it was happening to her. A disease. He had given her a disease.
She was not naïve enough to believe he had been faithful, but she had thought that he would at least be careful. The late nights at work had become more frequent, even the occasional night when he didn't come home had made it obvious that something was going on. But he was the man she loved, in spite of everything, so she had buried her head in the sand and turned a blind eye to the obvious.
This, however, was too much.

She reported him missing as soon as she woke up. She had tried a week earlier but was told that an adult needed to be gone for at least seven days before a missing person report could be filed.
She hoped that he would never be found.

It had been an unusually mild winter and the trend seemed to be carrying on into early spring.
The roses would be blooming early this year.
Despite the slight chill in the air she was compelled to tend to her garden. The first shoots of green were already beginning to poke through the hard packed earth.
She had received her annual call from the Sheriff's department that morning informing her that no progress had been made in locating her missing husband. She allowed herself a slight smile at the news.
Her neighbours, who had rallied around after JJ's disappearance, frequently stopped by to admire her garden. They often remarked on her success at growing anything in the rough arid soil. She would just smile and thank them for their support.
In one more year, he would be declared dead and she would be free to move on both physically and mentally.
Until then she would prepare the ground for her flowers. She loved her work in the garden. Flowers can keep your secrets.

Not bad, but I didn't really buy the transition from naive girl to calculated killer. She seemed to be okay with all the crap in her marriage except for the fact that he gave her an STD, which is apparently the only nudge she needs to turn her to murder.
I don't know, man. Doesnt' sit right with me. But a pretty good post otherwise.
