I

I don't presume to know much about love, but this I know:
The love of another must be a red love, crimson and
Delicate, pulsing and sweeping as the ocean's ebb and flow,
The riptide, the undertow, treacherous and eternal,
Scarlet water as deep as a grave, wide as the arms of God,
Shifting waves that rock our failures and successes to sleep,
Foam, simple, to coat our disagreements, paint them all new,
A moving face that greets streaming vessels with a curl-lap kiss;

Ancient, roving presence, immortal by its mortal design
Bubbling up as if sprung from some split rock in the desert,
Old as Eden's gates, as the vast firmament and candlelight:
There before man conquered filament, steam or rolling wheel,
There still after the weight of years reduce these feats to dust;
The bounding main - the home of all things before, our home again.

A red love not forgotten but made trivial over years,
Scarred by men flagitious and mercenery women, with
Talk of ego, act and the immediate on their cracked lips,
Wording breath that would bring the briar rose to crumble
And level mountains to the ground, spilling rubble to the sea.

Diminished as the sun when evening casts its purple shadows
Upon the fluid canvas of the skies, the ocean persists,
Continues, though the faintest of canals, to feed the earth
Silently, subdued;
Waiting for the hour when rivulets will expand, feed a flood,
And blanket the world again in a shroud of deepest claret.

Roll, tide.

II

The mechanics of a meeting are understood:
He, this, she, that, a back and forth
Of arrangements ultimately needless once the hooks are in,
(Yet even capable fishermen see beauty in the sticking of a worm)
The gestures made, the reactions assigned, anticipated, still please,
The dance of the courtesan, the paramour's song,
These and more but the prestige of a magic act.

Below, beyond, the greater explosion of action,
A chemical world of fired neurons and assembled memory
That cripple or create in a fraction of a splinter of an instant,
Magnificent the rush and reverberation of untraceable rapture,
Impossible the flash and ferocity of the subdermal,
Beautiful still, the flush of the magician's cheek;
All, all is limbic and nothing is left to chance,
Nothing but the meeting and its understood mechanics.

How can one attempt to express the true nature of emotion?
It would be easier to explain the color blue to a blind man.

Love, the simplest complexity of the human condition.

III

Vide cor meum
See it with slow eyes that sigh when in my foolishness I've erred,
With kittenish eyes that dance their gaze across my morning pillow,
Eyes amber in the sunlight,
And richest copper in the midnight shade;
See it beat reckless with rhythm, flash and boom,
A pulse become a thunderclap at the feel of your hair on my face;
See it burn brilliant, for you,
Always you,
Smoldering when your shoulder turns and raging when you smile.

Audi cor meum
Hear it shout to you from across the divide
As you did at the beginning and will as we advance,
Hear the plain song of devotion it sings
Ever the same song, ever the same
Harmony free of vanity and conceit,
It will sing it until the day I die, and will sing it in the heavens when my eyes no longer wake.

Frange cor meum
Batter my heart with the way you say my name,
Break it with the bearing of children and the promise of unavoidable loss,
Shatter it to splinters, unrecognizable fragments of flesh and blood as small as stardust that no man could ever hope to reconstitute,
Beat it to a pulp, wring the very lifeblood from it,
Break it into a million little pieces if it suits you,
I will not stay your hand.

Emenda cor meum
Mend it with a word, a kiss, and the warmth of your body in the winter,
Mend it with your love
As I have mended yours.

Tene cor meum. Esto perpetua.

I see the rising tide approaching, and I welcome it,
I long to be washed away in the flood.

Cor tuum
Cor meum
Io sono in pace

HEY! Did you steal the word "flagitious" from my round 1 post?

Just kidding, man. This was terrific. Listening to the MP3 while I read it added significantly.

Looks like it may be you and me in round 3, O-Man, so if that's the case, bear this in mind...

I guess times have changed since you went to school, Bubs.
I did French and Spanish in high school, and Italian in college.
Latin would have helped w/ my medieval lit. courses - the lot of them - but a smattering of Old & Middle English had to suffice.

I consider it a loss in a way.

I'm going to go out on the proverbial limb here and say
The Bard has NOTHING on you. The imagery is superb!

You should look into publishing a compendium of your
best works.

P.S. The Latin was excellent. I don't understand how you
got a degree in English without it. I had to take THREE
YEARS OF IT FOR MINE!!

The first half was good but not great, but the second half (ish) was just great. I liked where it ended up.

I don't presume to know much about poetry, but this I know:

My subdermal is a-flash,
My cheeks are a-flush,
And I fear I will be washed away in the flood
Gushing forth from my girl bits;
I feel the rising tide approaching.

You're amazing.

There, I said it.

Shatter it to splinters, unrecognizable fragments of flesh and blood as small as stardust that no man could ever hope to reconstitute,

This should be two lines:

Shatter it to splinters, unrecognizable fragments of flesh and blood
As small as stardust that no man could ever hope to reconstitute

That's it. I'm done correcting this.
Remind me to never post in haste.

And try to imagine there isn't a space between "curl-lap kiss" and "Ancient, roving..."
Stupid cut'n'paste fucked me on formatting.

God knows if the Latin translations are right. Damn the internet and its lack of accountability, and myself for skipping Latin in high school/college.

Vide cor meum - see my heart
Audi cor meum - hear my heart
Frange cor meum - break my heart
Emenda cor meum - mend my heart
Tene cor meum - hold my heart
Esto perpetua - let it be forever

Cor tuum - your heart
Cor meum - my heart
Io sono in pace - I am in peace
