Today was supposed to be a great and wonderfull day, I was supposed to have CQ for work today (CQ stands for Charge of Quarters). I was supposed to sit on my ass in the barracks all day long watching TV and making sure people dont do stupid shit/ making sure strangers arent entering...watching TV and playing computer, pretty much for 24 hours, then I get tommorow off (sweet deal huh?). Well at 6am this morning I got a call from my 1st line supervisor telling me that something new has come up. I was to go to the motorpool and prepare a HMMWV (Humvee) to go recon a signal site near Okchan.
So I'm thinking well fuck, there it goes. But come to find out this mission was only to take a few hours and I should be sitting on my ass in CQ by noon. Not bad, shitty, but not too bad. So we take off and I'm driving with 3 passengers for about an hour when I fucking got hit by a Korean! Now, technically I hit him, but it was his fault (switching over in a no lane changing zone and only giving a 1 second blinker warning). Now, you know how normal accidents are...like exchange info, a tow truck shows up within 30 mins and your on your way to somewhere warm. NOT IN THE FUCKING ARMY. Everything that happens has to be done according to the Armys suprisingly anal retentive standards. We had to call the chain of command while trying to "convince" this Korean national not to just drive off. After that we had to call the Korean National Police to make sure that this Korean guys story is justly heard. Then we have to wait for our Military Police to show up from our post, which is over an hour away by now. Then we have to wait for our Commander to come on the scene. Then we have to wait for our Companys wrecker (army style tow truck) to arrive.
This whole process took around 4 hours. 4 hours of sitting our asses in the freezing cold, because our antifreze tank burst during the accident. Yea during this whole time (were on THE main highway in Korea) not ONE Korean stopped and asked us if we needed help or anything, I guess their real assholes when it comes to that. Finally all the paperwork with the police is done and our wrecker shows up towing the new HMMWV we are to use to complete the mission.
So we get our new HMMWV off of the wrecker and attach the old one to the wrecker, and drive off in our new HMMWV, 2 hours after we arrive in the "approximate area" of the site we are to recon. We were reconing because we didnt really know where it is, we figure out the exact location through a mixture of memory, telephone calls, and strip maps (a peice of paper that someone drew out saying, heres a highway, heres a sign i think i remember, turn right, see that bridge, go over it, turn right after...i think....etc...). We drive around this mountian for a good 3 more hours, and finally find the road we think takes us up to the site, but the thing is covered in snow. So we bust out the snow chains (which we had to stop and reset like 6 times, because they were shitty chains) and start heading up the mountain, on the way up we saw atleast 4 cars stuck on the side of the road and 1 car that slid down the mountian...with a SUV toppled over ontop of it (sucks to be them). And were thinking "hummmm promising" so we keep going up, being the impeccable geniuses we are, and finally make it to the top and find the stupid ass site. and its 6pm by the time we finnished that. So we head back and finally arive home at about 9pm. Now I'm tired and all I wanna do is fucking go to sleep...but no, I get CQ, I get to stay up untill 9am tommorow, YAY!

It's been a few years for me, but aren't the radiators in Humvees ON TOP of the engine block? Couldn't you just plug up the hose and go back to the motor pool?

The entire casing was cracked, and no, because the motor pool was atleast an hour 1/2 out, and being that our tire got slashed from the subsequent median swipe we took as we were doing our nice little 180 turn in the middle of the road, I didnt see driving anywhere as a possibility. Would YOU go over 100 kilometeres on a run flat?
