I don't care what your political affiliation or values are, but you have to admit what Jimmy Carter said at Coretta Scott King's funeral (whether you agree or not)--right in front of Bush--took some major fucking balls:

"The efforts of Martin and Coretta have changed America, they were not appreciated even at the highest level of government. It was difficult for them personally -- with the civil liberties of both husband and wife violated as they became the target of secret government wiretapping, other surveillance... and as you know, harassment from the FBI...

We only have to recall the color of the faces of those in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi who are most devastated by Katrina to know that there are not yet equal opportunities for all Americans..."

Jimmy Carter has to be the worst president this country has ever seen. He sat in the white house for over a year, while all of those people in Iran were held hostage for over 400 days. Pussy. And Clinton is just as bad. Yemen had Osama Bin Laden back during Clinton's presidency, and they offered Osama to us twice, but NOOO. Clinton was a pussy and didn't think there was enough "evidence" for us to obtain the terrorist fuck. He's a TERRORIST. He fucking KILLS people, no matter who they are, without remorse. He doesn't need to be held to the standards of a court system, let alone ours. We had a chance. GW Bush is doing a kick-ass job.

I think most of us would agree that Carter was a shitty president, but you don't seem to get the point.

Jimmy Carter was a terrible president, I dont care for GWB but I would take him over Carter any day.

What really pisses me off is the political pandering remark concerning Hurricane Katrina. Does anyone here think that all those black people you saw in the Superdome and Convention center stayed because they had no other choice? At most 20% of them had no choice, its not like black people dont own automobiles or have relatives that own them. There have even been articles written about how many ruined cars that were left in front of houses. No wonder the Deomacratic party cannot get any traction in this country. Screw Jimmy Carter, screw him in his wrinkled pooper.

Thats pretty true.

But my point was that IT IS DISRESPECTFUL TO THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF THE DECEASED TO POLITICIZE A FUNERAL.

I would be just as disgusted if it had been the other way around. There is no excuse for it. There are times and places for this sort of thing, and funerals are not it.

And yes, funerals are for the family and friends of the deceased. Obviously, they're dead. I made a typo.

C'mon, man, it's not about respect for the dead (in fact, something tells me Coretta would have been happy with what Carter said). Carter and Bill Clinton had nothing to lose/gain by being there--there political careers are over. Hillary--yes, she did. Other than Laura and his dad, do you think there was a single person in that room that voted for Dubya? This President and everyone who is a part of his administration need to be ready to take this stuff no matter where they go, since the country has not been this polarized since Reagan was in office.

When Presidents go to funerals of this nature, they're there as representatives of the people(me, you, Joe-Bob in Kentucky). The only thing political about this is the fact that he is a politician. And whether they were on a first name basis is besides the point. Correta and MLK Jr. dramatically changed America. That alone is good enough reason for the president and former presidents to attend either of their funerals.

What political tactic was he there for? What did he gain by being there? I agree about the PR reason, but the same can be said about Carter and Hillary. However the reason for being there is not the issue. It is how some of the guests chose to turn it into their political soapbox.

It's one thing to televise a funeral, such was done with JFK, the Pope, etc. They are televised to give the public a chance to pay their respects to the deceased, not to provide a public arena for political speaches.

If Bush had gone up there and started in about how Clinton hardly had any Black, high ranking members in his administration, he would have been booed off the stage and would have been the lead story of every news organization for weeks.

Whether I agreed with the statements or not, A funeral is the absolute last place to make politically charged speaches.

But maybe I just have more respect for the dead than others do.

President Bush went to Correta's funeral to show his respects to the woman and her survivors, not to sell his new agenda, or to spit at his opponents.
----------------------------------
Normally, I'd be against what Carter and the reverend did, but if you think Bush was there out of the goodness of his own heart, you're being naive. This was a "have to be there" situation. This woman was maybe the most beloved female in the black community, thus, any active President would have had to show up solely for PR reasons. Also, Coretta Scott King was vehemently against most every policy of Bush's.

I was outraged at all the political statements being made at the FUNERAL. A FUNERAL!!! The time when a person's life is celebrated, and remembered. Not a time for politically charged speaches(I refuse to call them uelogies).

President Bush went to Correta's funeral to show his respects to the woman and her survivors, not to sell his new agenda, or to spit at his opponents.

I can't believe they would think anything good could come from such a blasphemous display. Is that what the democratic party stands for? Turning funerals into political showcases?
==================================

Yes.
"anything for your next vote" should be the tag line for the Democratic party.

Do you think Bush was on a first name basis with her?
His being there wasn't for showing respect, but was just a political tactic itself.
And by the way, if you want your funeral to be a solemn event,
DON'T BROADCAST IT ON NATIONAL TELEVISION!

I was amazed by all of the Bush bashing at the funeral. Truly amazing the shit that guy takes from everyone.

Jimmy Carter is a pretty decent dude though.

Wasn't expecting that.

I saw this in a movie about a bus that had to speed around a city,
keeping its speed over fifty, and if its speed dropped, it would
explode! I think it was called `The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down.'
